Why do so many people have this weird idea that things in Equestria are designed without magic in mind and thus can easily be cheated by magic?
 
Vending machines are certainly magic-proofed to keep unicorns from doing exactly that, with sensors that will alert authorities if any attempt is made to breach them.
 
The real question here is why Twilight’s trying to steal a bag of chips when she certainly isn’t struggling for funds and can just buy them from a store.

Perhaps one option is that there would be no unconstitutional magic control, but rather there would be a powerful magnetic lock on the flap to prevent it from opening until someone buys something.

I don’t think they’d be smart enough to create outright vending machines. They always stop one step short of a valid means of making money, because they just have to be assholes who screw their customers. Their cider machine would have been insanely profitable if they didn’t try to screw the Apple Family, their cure-all tonic would have been insanely popular if just marketed as an all-natural health drink as beet leaves and apple juice would be really healthy and tasty for horses, their friendship school would have been insanely profitable if they just made a curriculum themselves which would have been easier than stealing Twilight’s (or taught business, magitek, or any of the things they actually know), etc. Their vending machine would probably be something dumb like this XD

I’d like to think so, but it took them being invaded, occupied by an enemy, and driven to the brink of defeat like 12 times in a row before they said “Hey, let’s actually bolster Canterlot’s defenses so this won’t happen again!” And then it STILL happened again XD

No, that sounds like a very basic thing in a world of magic. It makes sense too. What’s the point of a vending machine if one third of the population can forever get things for free?

Unless Flim and Flam are involved, then you can bet they’ll do anything they can to maximize their profits, in addition to charging obscenely high prices (the latter not being too different from today’s reality 0_o).

Assuming the operation of airships and air traffic control rely on magic, it would seem likely that untrained, outside sources might be detrimental to safety, so absolutely, though possibly designed in such a way as to allow unicorns to use their telekinesis within a limited area.

Chances are, in a world where magic is so common, vending machines would have charms or other protection to prevent the removal of items via either teleportation or telekinesis.

Princess Twilight’s first edict as ruler of Equestria was to outlaw evil vending machines.

My headcanon is she chastised Starlight for relying too much on her magic to solve her problems to which Starlight responded by challenging Twilight not to use hers, and Murphy’s law ensues.
