A while back there was a strip where Twilight and Spike had a talk where she wanted Spike to be sure Lily was “the one” and they had gotten married before doing the deed. And, of course, “protection” isn’t foolproof. One forgotten/broken condom, and you could have an unintentional pregnancy on your hands.
So Twilight just holds the more traditional view of sex.

That’s why I suspect 30s. Rarity is old enough to be sexually jaded. You generally don’t hit that without some time under the belt.

Spike is not a kid in this series. He’s treated as a young adult.  
In this series, Twi has said Spike is a little bit younger than her.
 
So they are all adults… or something. :D Purposely vague. But they seem to be in an age where they should be somewhat successful with careers and what not.

Good question. It would make some sense if Twilight was shown as irrational here but it seems like she’s supposed to be right about this. It’s really weird.
