I like to think that the ponies of Equestria are unlike real horses in how their coats are. I say their coats are generally long, soft and fuzzy, kept that way by shampoo & conditioner. A pony’s fur is technically hair, so it doesn’t stop growing. As such, they have to get the equivalent of a haircut every now and then to keep themselves from looking like Hairity.

Some ponies like their coats long. Some like them short. It’s really all about personal preference.
