One of Dragon Lord Torch’s greatest achievements was establishing the first-ever alliance between the Dragon Lands and the East Haysian empire of Manechuria, known to the locals as Longguo. News of this alliance shook other nations to their core. The Dragon Lands and Manechuria were already forces to be reckoned with independently, but together they were unstoppable.
As Dragon Lord, Torch was notoriously averse to allying with other nations because of the obligations involved. This made this powerhouse of an alliance especially ominous. The newly founded kingdom of Equestria responded by strongly promoting an image of neutrality on the international stage and the Centaur King Vorak abandoned his imperialistic agenda altogether to avoid any possibility of clashing with dragon interests.
Manechuria’s imperial social rules were very difficult to navigate and it surprised many creatures that the brutish Dragon Lord was able to do it. The Manechurian nobles had always dismissed the fire-breathing dragons of the Western hemisphere as savages, generally wanting nothing to do with them. But after the Tianlong Emperor ascended the throne, Torch shot his shot.
Torch knew that it would take some time for the Tianlong Emperor’s proverbial wings to harden, and the Empress Dowager’s opinion of the Dragon Lands was much more favorable than the Emperor’s late father’s. Torch wasn’t pleased with being connected to the Empress Dowager, but he was correct in the assessment that accepting her help was necessary.
As proof of his intentions, Torch offered the Tianlong Emperor the most beautiful daughter of a respected Alpha, a Western dragon warlord. The daughter consented to the arrangement and the Emperor liked her so much that she was promoted to Consort after hatching two royal sons.
His hard work in maintaining good relations with the Tianlong Emperor had really paid off for the Dragon Lands, so when newly crowned Dragon Lord Ember got too friendly with Princess Jian on her first official visit, let’s just say Torch wasn’t impressed.

They are not dragons in my headcanon, even if they share some attributes. Kirins have kept to themselves for the most part until Princess Twilight’s reign, so spotting them outside of their own habitat was rare. Manechurian dragons associate kirins with righteousness and consider the appearance of a kirin a good omen.
How do the dragons see the Kirin? They’re technically dragons but in this context it’s doubtful they’re even necessarily related.
