I’m not seeing where the hate toward Tara is coming from. She’s pretty clearly pissed at the organizers (who are looking every day more like con artists) instead of general fans, and would rather general fans send their donations to people who actually need them instead of people well off enough to take a flight to Vegas to geek out over ponies.

Beyond making sure the people who went to the convention have their bases covered and can get home safely, I couldn’t agree more.

The point is that people care where their money goes and where it comes from. You don’t want to recieve money from a friend because that makes you feel indebted to them and you don’t want to give money to a crook because they’re a crook and if anything they deserve to lose money, not gain.

Show talent getting the financial shaft from unethical and/or reckless con staff is sadly nothing remotely new.

For bronies, this is the first major convention gaffe, and the donation drives to make amends (combined with Tara’s helpful context on how bronies donate) should make this forgivable.

She’s not really angry that she didn’t get paid, although that is part of it. She’s angry that Las Pegasus is outright lying to everyone through their teeth.

She missed her kid’s Karate tournament. I think she’s most upset about that, honestly.

I think she could be more gracious or at least polite about the donations thing, yes, but…she really does love her kids.

I personally think one’s own children should always come first. I can’t blame her at all.

It’s not so much that she’s mad at the fans, is that she doesn’t want their money. She doesn’t want the fans to feel obligated for fixing someone else’s mistakes.

Tara’s got money, it’s not like she’s going broke. It’s the principle of the thing.

Am I the only one seeing an inconsistency with Tara’s logic? First she complains about being ripped off a ton of money. Fair enough. I’d be far more angry if I were in her shoes, so I can understand that. But then she’s telling people to not offer to reimburse her for what she got screwed out of?

Just what is it that she wants exactly? Yeah the con organisers are complete failures and possibly crooks. Yeah you want your money back. But when a bunch of kind people hear about your money loss and decide to give their own money to you because they care, you throw it back at them?

Seems very much like a case of having a cake and eating it too. Plus it seems rude to me. If I were down thousands and people decided to offer me charity, I damn well wouldn’t shove it back at them. Especially after kicking up a massive stink about it.

Whether there are more worthy causes or not is irrelevent. Somebody has decided that you are worthy of their generosity, it would be hurtful to refuse their kindness.

If you seriously cannot take charity in good conscience, then there are more polite ways to do it. Something like “Thank you for your donations, I appreciate it, but I would feel bad taking them when their are sick children who need help”. Yeah that’s too long for a twitter, but you can shorten it to carry the same respectful decline.

@Background Pony
I agree with Tara on this one. This isn’t a case of a convention going a little wrong. It imploded in the worst way possible.

Put yourselves in Tara’s shoes. If you were offered an essentially free trip somewhere fun and you get to talk about something you love (in Tara’s case, voice acting), wouldn’t you jump at that chance? If it turned out that not only was the trip not all-expenses-paid, but you ended up having to pay for much of the trip yourself, wouldn’t you be feel burned by this, too?

(It is standard procedure for fan conventions to pay for their special guests’ travel and hotel.)

Another thing to keep in mind is that it’s rare for conventions to flub this badly. Tara has gone to a lot of conventions. I think she herself is still shocked and angry how badly this one was run.

I don’t think it’s fair to call Daniel are Tara such bad names. I think they’re both really disappointed. They both love the community and I think they really want to go to more fan conventions, but this makes it harder to argue in favor of going to more of them. :/

I don’t think I’m overreacting when I now say this is starting to make this fandom look pretty shitty.

If I was Tara I’d never attend another con again and tell us all to go fuck ourselves.
Background Pony #01C0
She says she doesn’t want a dime from the fans, but I bet she’ll still take what she’s owed out of the donation pool just like everyone else.

I’m honestly not sure what I’d do if I was in her situation. She and Daniel are right to be ticked off.

I disagree because none of her actions would have to be public. The actions of the agent or any legal consultation necessary would not have to be up front or in public. It would just have been dropped and forgotten.

@Corrderio
Over 20 guests were invited, having been promised that their transport and accomodation would be covered. But they weren’t paid. Much of the conventions money is unaccounted for, we’re talking tens of thousands at least.

Also, heaps of convention-only cash was sold, yet vendors never had it redeemed causing some to lose lots of cash.
