I never played the first DC, but from what I hear the game is considered “good, but also really over complicates most of it’s mechanics” (Pat from Two Best Friends Play described it as “too much survival horror”). Now I did play the second one years ago as a rental and I really enjoyed it. :)
 
Never played the third but apparently I didn’t miss anything special. :P
