I still don’t understand this “standardised birthday” thing. They are not all born on that day, but it’s used for paperwork ?
 
It’s for racing and other competition purposes at least. Somewhat like being eligible for kindergarten or not if you were born a certain time in the year.
 
Historically a particular date was chosen because many mares actually gave birth around that date due to the peculiarities of their oestrus cycle.
