According to the staff in the forums, it’s because the alternate themes were getting harder to work with what with the new changes to the site and everything. So they decided to let them go.

I would go for an RBG slider + color intensity slider with numerical entry on the side and have custom color themes of the mane 8 + spike, celestia, luna, cadence, and others or let the user be able to create such themes and save them back onto the PC for sharing and quick changing.

Not everything is black and white.
If you are saying the white background is too bright, consider switching to the dark background.
