Indeed, the toys were kinda touch and go for a while (pink Celestia, anyone?). But if anything, I like to think that makes it all the more significant when the show and the toys actually agreed on something.

I have the same opinion about the movie, it was much better than I could expect. G5 started being good enough to replace G4.

I agree, but my point was that until we saw a character sitting or lying in a way that confirmed that cutie marks were on both sides, there was still a little debate as to whether that was the case. Again, I’m not saying it was a big debate or one that preoccupied the fandom, but it was something wondered about. I remember a post on Ponibooru during season two saying something to the effect that ‘x’ scene in ‘y’ episode confirms that cutie marks are indeed on both sides.
 
“B-But the toys…” you mean the toys that said Lyra’s name was just “Hearstrings” for quite a while? Toy canon back then was taken with quite a few grains of salt.

Model-flipping notwithstanding, showing cutie marks on both sides was so consistent even this early on (including with the toys) that this could really only be called an animation error (on top of that, there was another even more egregious error later on in that same scene).

IIRC it was Ticketmaster. It’s one where Rainbow Dash has an imagine spot about showing off to a crowd and impressing the Wonderbolts enough to join them.

That was how it was meant to be, but I distinctly remember an overhead show of Rainbow Dash that only showed her cutie mark on one flank, and there was debates back until season two if they technically had them on both sides. Not large debates, but more of whether what was flash animation making flipping the models much easier to work with thus cutie marks on both sides, or only on one side because the animators were lazy.
 
To note: even back then I thought they were on both sides, and the people who said they were only on one side were being pedantic.

Scanning through some random S1 episodes, that doesn’t seem to have been the case. Right from S1, they were pretty consistent with having the marks on both sides.

Wait, their cutie marks are only on one side? I didn’t even notice that…though IIRC it was the same for S1 of g4, and was more of an animation oversight more than anything else.

I just saw the movie, and I had been genuinely hoping I didn’t hate it. But I have to say…
 
 
I absolutely loved it. If I had to come up with one complaint, and it is really a case of looking hard for something to complain about, it’s that the first act had just a little bit too many “stop for a musical number” moments for my taste. The songs were not in any way bad, but it made it feel to me just a little slow in getting to the point.
