Hitch and Argyle’s relationship is more interesting since the Winter Wishday Special since Argyle was there with his Granny. Close Family Friends. Wouldn’t surprise me that Argyle was a good influence on the colt.

Argyle: She’s a good filly but I’m worried she’ll get herself killed with some idea like summoning a dead unicorn.
Hitch: Oh boy do I remember that. Don’t worry sir, I made sure she didn’t do that.
Argyle: Good. giggles You know Hitch, you remind me of a great protector with shining armor, who trained with great discipline, with great skills in weaponry, a great tactician and most of all protected his loved ones and ponies around him with all his might.
Hitch: Sounds like a cool guy! Who is this?
Argyle: You’ll know who he was someday.
One of my favorite headcanons.
I like to think Hitch had great respect for Argyle even if he didn’t understand what Argyle was preaching about. But he had never seen another stallion filled with such wisdom, intelligence and kindness like him. And I’m pretty sure Argyle made sure to teach him (and even Sprout, to Sprout’s annoyance) some moral lessons.

That’s how I figured it too.
I think it would have been better if in the movie somepony like Sprout said, “just let her be with her new friends since she clearly doesn’t care for her own kind anymore”. And Hitch gave an excuse that he needed to capture her. But he just wanted her to be safe.

He truly thought they were dangerous then. If my theory is correct, he figured prison would be the best way to protect her so she wouldn’t rush into danger. And that when he realized there was no danger, he figured the cage was no longer necessary.
