Odd, because I was under the assumption that he had more or less lost a great deal of his trademark power over the property from all the unlicensed C&H related stuff that went uncontested for too long.

Careful, Bill Waterson might sue you for this. Some guy made a really cool silent, fan-animated short on Youtube recently based on an old Calvin & Hobbes Sunday comic, and he got a “cease & desist” letter from Bill Waterson forcing him to take it down… (Can you believe that? Over a 50-second FAN animation of C&H.)

Kinda made me lose a bit of respect for Bill. (It wasn’t disrespecting C&H at all, had NO voices, wasn’t claiming ownership, and the artwork was very accurate to the comic…)
