Background Pony #BE0C
Average unforgiving police rules (Tia and Luna) vs Nordic forgiving police rules (Twilight)
Background Pony #BE0C
Even in this comic, Twilight made another Goodness Zone, further proving she is purely good alongside Fluttershy of the mane six, however, Celestia and Luna, while they have pages there, their versions of this comic does not qualify.

Do I have clinical narcissism? Only on the internet apparently. Because I can never say this much bull in real life. I’m not gonna lose control of my attitude anytime soon though. I have had many people arguing against me but I’m too stubborn to change my mind. I have come to understand people’s points in the past but I’m usually still too deep in my own thoughts to do a complete turn around. Again, this is only on the internet. I can do none of this in real life. XD
I have seen people actually being pretty serious about Cozy Glow though. I mean some actually call the kid sociopath and deserve no redemption as if she was a real person. I myself love that they make this child so over-the-top evil that I kind of enjoy her as a villain. I guess it’s the same sense as Darla Dimple just like you said, so funny people love her. That’s why I don’t care if they get redeemed or forgiven or whatever. I love villains as fictional characters. I simply enjoy watching characters having the freedom to do whatever they want. I never really take what they do seriously at all. For me, if we try to add any backstories in them, we’re essentially trying to take them seriously and strip away the fun out of their villainy. So in my mind, if we want to give villains backstories to make us take them seriously, they shouldn’t be over-the-top and cliche. That would minimize the sympathy we’re supposed to have for those characters. Either make the backstories serious or not have backstories at all to retain their simple fun evilness, even if the character wasn’t subtle from the start. I mean if this comic is really going to fix some aspects of the show, maybe it could fix Cozy Glow’s lack of subtlety as well.
I guess my issues with the finale never have anything to due with these three. I didn’t care if they were forgiven or reformed. I had more problem with Discord being Grogar than anything. I was actually indifferent to their fate and their origins, so I’m like “Eh why not?” when I see people wanting those 3 to be redeemed. And when people argue and make so many comments about this comic, I thought this comic would do something different and have pretty subtle origins for the 3 villains, but I still think it’s okay at best. It’s pretty cliche and ordinary. The three villains for me don’t need backstories, because that wouldn’t do anything for me. They’re perfectly cool as villains for me. I don’t care if they get reformed. I like them just the way they are, deliciously evil (except for maybe Tirek. He’s boring). But if we’re gonna reform them anyway, why not give me more unique, subtle, and less cliche origins? Because those backstories actually ruin them for me. If this comic is about friendship and forgiveness like the show, why do we have to put unforgivable characters in it too? That’s the issue I have with the comic and those are not the issues I have with the show’s finale.
Good god I was getting really tired and almost wanted to make a stop but here I am typing all these. I really am addicted. :P

I swear to you this isn’t some high and mighty “Oh my feelings are hurt so let me argue back to protect my precious insecurities.” I am genuinely happy to have this discussion and I am so glad it’s continuing. It’s actually just a fun hobby for me so I’m just having fun.
You know what I meant and you know it. No one accused you of being an insecure egotist, you’re simply a little high on yourself. I never said it wasn’t a hobby for you, but you unabashedly claim yourself to rarely challenged in it, at least rare enough that your actually thanking me just for being able to counter your arguments
“thank you for being able to counter my criticism” is not something ANYONE says unironically. Do you have grandiose clinical narcissism or something? (It would definitely explain why your so polite and nice compared to internet trolls, despite the lack of normal, base level humility normal people talk with)
I still don’t see your point with Diamond Tiara vs Cozy Glow though. The show wasted the irredeemable parents trope on a bully? Is that trope worth something to be used on a big villain?
No one ever took Cozy Glow seriously as a big villain, so yes. 100 times yes. Of the final 3 villains, hers deserves to be the least deep and the least subtlety, yet harsh enough for her to toss away nearly all empathy for her own benefit.
So is it okay to have subtle backstories or not? I’m confused.
Backstories are better then having no backstories if the villain is in a show about friendship and reformation. Subtle and well written backstories are almost a prerequisite for a good villain’s reformation otherwise we never really see what drives them in the first place. And yes, it can be done non-visually and implied heavily, on a case by case basis.
The same applies to Cozy in terms of at least needing a backstory. but in Cozy’s case, who’s never been a good villain, or at least one you can take seriously, her personality and her I-woke-up-and-chose-supervillainy-early-in-life personality, does not exactly warrant the most subtlety. One could even make the argument that she’s so evil yet so young, her life story doesn’t have enough time for subtlety.
Were not talking about a Horror movie villain OR a super complex villain, were talking about someone who is essentially Darla Dimple
I know it’s just one person and it’s not directly at me
Then why bring it up?
but just like some people said, this is just a kids show with a poorly thought out finale. [[Agreed]] A comic trying to make up for it probably doesn’t need that much intelligence to understand.
That person used that dumb rick and morty meme badly.
If anyone has an issue with the most on point observations the comic has on the issues with the series, its not the people not smart enough to understand it, its the people who outright disagree with it despite it being pretty obvious, because they hold the series up to such a high degree and don’t like acknowledging a lot of the issues. And Derpibooru has a plethora of those.
On a side note, I’m glad we could see eye to eye on a few things

I swear to you this isn’t some high and mighty “Oh my feelings are hurt so let me argue back to protect my precious insecurities.” I am genuinely happy to have this discussion and I am so glad it’s continuing. It’s actually just a fun hobby for me so I’m just having fun.
There are other comments that already convinced me to believe the intention of these backstories is to give us insights of these 3 characters so I’ll just keep reading and see how the other princesses react. Now that little Twilight decided to be semi-suicidal I actually wonder how things are gonna turn out.
I still don’t see your point with Diamond Tiara vs Cozy Glow though. The show wasted the irredeemable parents trope on a bully? Is that trope worth something to be used on a big villain? Since Diamond Tiara only became a mere bully with an abusive parents, it probably wouldn’t help Cozy’s case to exact an world ending plan if she was given abusive parents as well. And yeah, maybe I shouldn’t use a horror movie as an example against My Little Pony when it comes to subtlety, but still, the subtlety just isn’t there when you have a dad yelling at the child. Also now I don’t know how to feel when you went from “The show has its share of lacking of subtlety” to “So what if it’s not subtle? The child herself is unsubtle anyway.” So is it okay to have subtle backstories or not? I’m confused.
Well, if you look below the comments, you can see someone saying “requiring intelligence to enjoy” and then someone else mocking it with a copypasta of that Rick and Morty meme. I know it’s just one person and it’s not directly at me, but just like some people said, this is just a kids show with a poorly thought out finale. A comic trying to make up for it probably doesn’t need that much intelligence to understand. And yes, I made a short novel worth of criticism for this little fan comic because of that intelligence comment and now I’m actually curious how this will turn out. My criticism may be invalid right now but I’m having fun.
Also the Discord example was definitely wrong. He probably only pretended to be reformed so he wouldn’t be turned back to stone again. I shouldn’t have said anything nice about Discord. My bad, not again.
I don’t care if it doesn’t work. I’m having fun here.
CronoM

You know, I also have to thank you for being able to counter my criticism. I think it’s fair that others also have criticism toward other criticisms.
Oh Jeez…
You know how sometimes, people try to be as eloquent and mild mannered as possible in a conversation to be polite, but try so hard in the wrong way, the pretentious levels go off the charts?
That’s your first paragraph. I don’t mean to offend, I’m mostly certain you didn’t intend it, but its…
““thank you for being able to counter my criticism””
Yeash~
That’s why this comic also doesn’t exempt from its own criticism when it’s criticizing the canon. And of course my criticism would have personal biases. That’s what opinions are. It’s people’s own thoughts and they will always bring their personalities into them. Criticism will always be subjective and never always right which is why it is allowed to get criticism as well.
Then I hope you will accept my criticism that not only was that very “Thank you Captain Obvious”, and that it has the some problem as the rest of your first paragraph, and that we should move on.
It’s honestly just a little fan comic for me.
Now here’s some counterpoints and I’ll be honest with why I’m so critical toward this comic
Finally my biggest problem with this whole comic
(raises eyebrow) Uh-huh. Not getting any mixed messages at all. Just a little fan comic that causes you to write tons of critical criticism. /sarcasm and sus)
I like to put some lighthearted stuff in my comments to show that I’m not completely serious about my criticism.
It doesn’t work. It just comes across as really, really forced. Try being more casual throughout your analysis if you want to do that, instead of tacking on a joke at the end
First the arguments about Diamond Tiara’s mother. That’s actually the problem. The show already has something similar to this kind of backstory so if the comic does exactly the same thing, does that make the comic just the same as the show.
It’s kind of ironic someone in the DeviantArt comments said that the show makes Cozy Glow Diamond Tiara 2.0 but this comic is the one making Cozy Glow another Diamond Tiara with abusive parents. It’s just that both parents are abusive instead of one this time. I know this comic isn’t implying it is better than the show but if it wanted to be. This is not the way.
My perspective on the matter is the show wasted the irredeemable parent trope on the mere bully, and sent the child of around the same age to Tartarus with absolutely no mention of parents or anything. You might as well have Celestia say “Your going to the shadow realm, Jimbo.”
And as for this comic doing something similar, the show copies itself dozens of times between a couple seasons, so it really doesn’t bother me Cozy has a similar but worse situation compared to Diamond Tiara.
And as for Cozy Glow herself….the comic writer didn’t create Cozy Glow. The actual canon show wrote her into existance and the show got stuck with her character and all the questionable ethics revolving around her being a Tartarus child inmate and a child turned to stone.
It raised a lot of eyebrows. Like the writers didn’t think this through at all.
The canon is stuck with her. Her presence damaged Celestia and Twilight’s character even more then the writers usually did (Twilight was never given a proper character arc to begin with, and Celestia was barely given any character exploration) in how she was created and dealt with.
I mean Cozy Glow is barely even her own character. She’s not even Diamond Tiara 2.0, she’s ripped straight from the child villain from Cats Don’t Dance, but a pony. That’s basically it.
Does that mean this comic has the same level of quality as the show?
Quality in terms of what? Quality is a loaded question. OVERALL quality? Obviously a show that looks as good as MLP:FiM is not going to be outdone in overall quality by a comic of this level?
Or are you talking about more specific quality? Like quality in terms of writing for certain characters, especially characters that were shafted like Twilight from any meaningful character growth and remaining from beginning to end Celestia’s….well…brown nosed toady, if were going to be 100% honest.
In that case, yes, in very specific cases, this comic surpasses the show. Considering how unpopular/divided many of the premiers/finales were, you would need a long list to list all the fans who could of wrote some aspects better then the show writers.
CronoM

Honestly I know the tragic backstories are probably necessary for some insights into the characters’ actions but I’d rather there was no backstory at all.
Like I harshly said, this is basically Rob Zombie’s Halloween where obviously awful father is the reason Michael Myers exists-
Here’s a crazy idea. How about we don’t use the original Halloween movie as a good reference for a child villain in a show called My Little Pony Friendship is Magic.
The point is redeeming them after all, and we already have something that may help them do that, the fact that those 3 actually care for each other.
No one is writing that off as a topic of choice later on in this comic.
The current focus is on Twilight getting everything off her chest because, let’s face it, she has a lot she represses regarding Celestia and her large list of enemies because her blind loyalty to Celestia outweighs most of her good judgement in the canon show. That’s basically her entire character in the entire show, and she never improves. The second her repression grows stronger then her loyalty to Celestia, a damn will break. Better she give it out in one go then keep it internal until it drives her more crazy.
Like I said, the real redeeming quality should come from the villains’ own hearts and traits instead of the fact that something bad happened to them. Perhaps some terrible things that happened in the past could be implied but we didn’t need to know the entire process.
Your stating such a VERY odd opinion on story telling as if its common knowledge or in anyway logical. Why? It makes no sense. Conflicts of the heart and traits can be extremely interesting when fleshed out WITH a characters background. The degree varies on a case by case basis, yet your boiling it down that none of them should even try.
Is that really your defense we have thousands upon thousands of good fictional stories where the background of a villain is explored? Its like your excusing laziness.
Tragic backstories should just be a tiny things that are indicated instead of focused so much on, and the real focus should be Twilight’s attempts at reforming those 3.
Or one could do BOTH. Backstories are being explored, AND Twilight is giving ample examples on why discussion and reforming should continue, and how Celestia and Starswirled have failed and created deeper resentment and more enemies.
You stating “Tragic backstories should just be a tiny things” as if it were common sense, means nothing. Its a case by case basis as anyone would tell you.
We don’t need to know them. We need to know those 3.
Its a good idea to know BOTH, at least to some extent. How villain characters associated with people in their past before they went full supervillain status gives us insight. It can make their actions in the present way more impactful. I’ve seen it done really well in fiction countless, countless times.
Discord only wanted to change out of his own heart and the fact that he might actually lose the only one who cares about him-
Only HALF the time. The other half he won’t even take tine to weight the options of disappointing Fluttershy.
Moreover, Discord is a perfect example of a case-by-case basis The guy has lived practically forever, and has lived most of his existence not being overtly evil (unless he’s carrying a grudge, or even if someone asks him to be evil OR good for funsies), but just toying with reality and causing chaos. His personality and powers from the getgo begets a person who’s never had an equal. The idea of him picking a side (and not on a whim) for someone special, is a foreign concept to him. In his case, his story and personality type encourages no prior attachments.
You just proved my point.
how high and mighty some people, and maybe even the comic itself, act toward this comic.
And that’s a bad thing?
We can’t exactly pretend much thought was put into a large portion of the premiers and finales. It doesn’t help that MLP is known to have a very toxic group of die hard fans that give excuses for the most ridiculously badly written parts of the show.
The comic is constantly pointing out a MASSIVE amount of ridiculous and enormous flaws the show had for years and were talked about a ton. Its cathartic for a large group of fans of the characters to read this one comic addressing a whole ton of these flaws. Is this comic perfect? Far from it. But its doing what it can do very well.
If it or anyone thinks it’s many times better than the show then all props to them.
See above. Its not trying to be better then show in its entirety. Its trying to deliver a story that gives closure to some of MLP:FiM’s weakest writing parts. And its not doing a bad job.
And I might be harsh here but this comic does it way more blatantly unsubtle than the show itself with a father whose character is literally just yelling.
Yeah, its almost as if unsutble and violent child-upbringings can warp a kid to have dangerous tendencies.
Cozy was never subtle. So, since she’s a canon character, her background would likely lack subtlety as well.
Fixes don’t have to be full retcons.
And yes this comic IS retconning ~20 years later Princess Twilight 2.0 aka Celestia clone, but….I honestly couldn’t care.
The point is, don’t go all “If you don’t like this comic, you’re probably not smart enough to understand it
No one is telling you that. Its fine if you don’t like the comic, its hardly the most high quality comic on this site. But if you are CONSTANTLY having to tell us you may have a lot of bias against it, and are not giving good criticisms for the areas the comic does well, then people WILL point out the flaws in your arguments. Its as simple as that. No one going ‘elitist-Rick-and-Morty-fan’ on you. (that’s where I most often hear the ‘you don’t have a high enough IQ to understand this show. Some people say it ironically, and some fans actually mean it)
I’ll still stick to my guns and feel the same way.
That sounds like an excuse to not be openminded and never change your opinion. Besides, we all do unintelligent things all the time, especially in long tern hindsight. Your the one who keeps on telling me you may be mistaken due to bias.

Now here’s some counterpoints and I’ll be honest with why I’m so critical toward this comic:
First the arguments about Diamond Tiara’s mother. That’s actually the problem. The show already has something similar to this kind of backstory so if the comic does exactly the same thing, does that make the comic just the same as the show. You said the show itself is immature and lacks subtlety. Does that mean this comic has the same level of quality as the show? It’s kind of ironic someone in the DeviantArt comments said that the show makes Cozy Glow Diamond Tiara 2.0 but this comic is the one making Cozy Glow another Diamond Tiara with abusive parents. Perhaps some terrible things that happened in the past could be implied but we didn’t need to know the entire process. The point is redeeming them after all, and we already have something that may help them do that, the fact that those 3 actually care for each other. Tragic backstories should just be a tiny things that are indicated instead of focused so much on, and the real focus should be Twilight’s attempts at reforming those 3. Every page is her trying to reason with them and taking them to places that might indicate their past. Obviously reforming them isn’t going to be easy so there will be multiple pages of that process. There is no need for abusive parents or downright evil characters shown right to us, just maybe some dialogue that imply those people exist. We don’t need to know them. We need to know those 3. I can’t believe I’m saying this but I actually think Discord’s reformation is actually a pretty good example. Discord only wanted to change out of his own heart and the fact that he might actually lose the only one who cares about him. There is absolutely no sob story telling us how he used to be or some even worse person making him like that. He just wanted to be good because he wanted to be good. That’s why I said it’s redundant to do tragic backstories when this is about Twilight trying to save those people and inadvertently her own redemption. The main point probably should be Twilight trying to save people instead of making us feel sad for them.
Finally my biggest problem with this whole comic with that all these tragic backstories and one dimensional cliche evil characters is how high and mighty some people, and maybe even the comic itself, act toward this comic. It’s not that great in my opinions. Like I harshly said, this is basically Rob Zombie’s Halloween where obviously awful father is the reason Michael Myers exists, not because he himself may just be pure evil which makes it scarier. And just like the Diamond Tiara example, this is basically doing the same thing as the show. And I might be harsh here but this comic does it way more blatantly unsubtle than the show itself with a father whose character is literally just yelling. Even Spoiled Rich eventually got some funny side that made her a bit likable in later seasons. The point is, don’t go all “If you don’t like this comic, you’re probably not smart enough to understand it” when it has just as many problems as the show itself. This is not some super intelligent masterpiece. It’s a fan comic that is still full of its own cliche and stereotypes. That’s probably what triggered me to be so critical all of the sudden, or the ironic thing is, I didn’t even care for this comic to begin with.
I may still sound biased again but that’s really how I feel about this comic. It’s honestly just a little fan comic for me. If it or anyone thinks it’s many times better than the show then all props to them. Everyone has the right to feel how they want but for me that’s just not it. To me, this comic has its own problems just like the finale and it really isn’t fixing anything for me. If I’m gonna be called “unintelligent” for that then I guess I’m not, but I’ll still stick to my guns and feel the same way.
Oh and that Fluttershy part was not a joke. It was serious. Don’t touch my best pony or I’ll drop this comic. Every depiction of her must be perfect and she has no falling back whatsoever. She is perfect.
Just kidding that was indeed a joke. I like to put some lighthearted stuff in my comments to show that I’m not completely serious about my criticism.
But seriously though her being afraid of flying is going a bit too far back even with Fluttershy.
CronoM

@Wayneponeth
Those are some interesting criticisms, but they don’t seem to hold water. They seem to be overly critical and WAY too clouded by some very personal biases.
honestly, it’s not that impressive
Its certainly weak in some areas, but definitely strong in many, MANY areas the show itself was too immature or lacked any clarity in dealing with.
I think there are a lot of unnecessary parts that make the plot cliche and redundant, like the abusive family thing I just mentioned. Cozy Glow’s father is probably the worst as he is just a walking cliche akin to again, Rob Zombie’s Halloween.”
The show has been guilty of that little subtlety many times. They had to introduce Diamond Tiara’s mom just to make Diamond Tiara redeemable remember?
If the point of this comic is for Twilight to stand out on her own and fix her character, why include the tragic backstories?”
Because the seed of villainy quite often is learned from something negative: pride, hate, tragedy, etc.
Twilight can’t fix her character closely tied with the villains if she doesn’t ask the right questions and learn from the perspective of villains.
This is villain reform 101.
Even if you want the influence of Cozy Glow, Tirek, and Chrysalis’ backstories to connect with their redemptions, you don’t have to make characters around them so horrible you want to punch them instead.”
Again, THE CANON show did this EXACTLY with Diamond Tiara’s mother.
And she was just a bully. For the 3 villains, whether they turned out worse or better then the examples they had earlier in life, or if they are truly beyond redemption, the fact remains that influences exist.
We have an irredeemable villain in this comic where we try to redeem the villains. Should we go back to that hunter pony’s life to understand why he does what he does and try to become friends with him too?”
Most of the people that would be in their backstories are either long dead or completely out of their lives. Twilight isn’t deluded enough to think she can create paradise on earth and make everyone still alive good people, but Twilight was there to witness Discord, Celestia and Luna make the same foolhardy mistakes over and over again while she did nothing.
Plus, Sombra was a villain, and he’s now dead as doornail. She likely wishes the outcome can be different, but now there is no chance for Sombra. These 3 have a chance. Better now then them inevitably escaping 1000 years in the future with their malice multiplied 100 times over.
the comic does indicate that the 3 villains do things out of their own intentions but that actually makes the insufferable parents and changeling killers even more pointless.”
No, it shows they have both agency AND have bad examples in their life. Its good to have backstories with both.
Going from “my father never thinks I’m good enough” to “I’m gonna suck away pony magic” doesn’t really make sense.”
I’ve heard worse back stories, especially when the goal is a pursuit of power.
And, if I’m going to be honest, makes a lot more sense then some canon former villain backstories I could name in MLP
I mean who does he want to heir his throne if he doesn’t let his son improve”
Yeah, who does Tirek’s father think he is? Sunset’s basically-foster-mother Celestia?
Half-joking aside, are we going to pretend kings and people of high royal station don’t have a tendency to be overly critical of their heirs?
Good parents can actually create misbehaving children”
Misbehaving? If you simply labeling her as misbehaving, then that just makes Celestia’s decision to send her to Tartarus worse. Its like she wanted more villains.
Wilson Fisk, The Kingpin has basically the same backstory too. Should he be redeemed too?”
I noticed that as well. Do you know what I ALSO noticed?
How old is Wilson Fisk when he became an introduced supervillain?
How old was Cozy Glow?
….
Besides, Spider-Man and Daredevil have tried to reason with Fisk at different occasions. Although the thing about Fisk is that he almost never hits rock bottom for comic book reasons. Kind of hard to reform a guy who stays on top no matter how many of his evil plans fail.
I think its obvious that the mlp villains have reached rock bottom even BEFORE they’ve LITERALLY been turned into ROCKS.
When’s the last time Fisk was literally turned into a rock?
but Celestia and Luna are really terribly done in this. They have absolutely no emotions whatsoever
While that is a weakpoint in the writing, it isn’t helped that their actions from Season 3 onward to finally turning a child to stone for eternity, a fate worse then death depending on who you ask, last episode… makes their thinking process pretty sus.
If they have emotions, which they did, why did the original show writers get rid of their emotions last episode?
Sure, its awkward and clunky, but so is having a canon Celestia and Luna okay with what they did.
but broke Fluttershy. I mean post season 9 Fluttershy, afraid of flying? After all the courage she had finally developed? I won’t forgive you if you’re trying to screw over best pony.
Not exactly a major influential scene in this comic, just a throw-away joke. Besides, wasn’t there an episode where they acknowledged they fall back on bad habits now and then?
Its a silly throw away joke. I know (looks at profile) Fluttershy is your favorite, but c’mon.
Plus, this only reinforces my earliest comment about how your criticisms partially are influenced by too many personal biases

Thank you~ I always try my best to never directly attack anyone when it comes to criticism. The most I would do is attack fictional characters. (What I do to Discord for example.) I love doing this kind of thing and it really makes me glad some people even like my comment.

Your comment is literally the only good criticism on this comic i have seen. Everyone else who tried to critisize it either came out as whiny or complained about stuff that are not even there.
You earned a new level of respect from me.

While I am on Twilight’s side here, I’m starting to get confused on which friends she is referring to when saying that the villain trio aren’t any worse than the friends she’s made. Who is she talking about? The Mane Six or the other reformed villains?

It’s only harsh if it sounds like an insult that those on the previous pages give. A critic can be harsh but never mean.
Anyway, now that you said it, I’m reminded of Mowgli, Legend of the Jungle where a village hired a hunter to kill Shere Khan but he used it more of an excuse to hunt trophies instead.

@Phoenixflambe
He was smiling and saying that “I can’t get good trophies” line, indicating he was partially hunting her down for his own pleasure. Heck it might have done that multiple times before. It was probably out of fear too but this comic had to include that one snippet because god forbids any character other than Cozy Glow, Chrysalis, and Tirek have any redeeming qualities themselves. Again, doesn’t it feel shallow when you only care about a villain just because there is someone even worse above them?

Thank you by the way. I didn’t really know if a full on criticism of a little fan comic was okay. I mean the creator still put a lot of effort into it and I was afraid I might come off as too harsh.
