Nightfall Morningstar Sparkle was born to Velveteen Twilight Sparkle and Midnight Sparkle in Sire’s Hollow, the ancestral home of Gusty the Great and a well known unicorn village in western Equestria. She grew up with her older brother, Shining Morning Armor Sparkle, as well as her fellow unicorn foals. Sunset Shimmer, Sunburst, Cascading Starlight Glimmer, and Moondancer Fey were her closest friends, all unicorns around the same age. They spent days running through the town, causing a sorts of mischief and making foalhood memories.
Sunset would be the first to leave the group. After earning her cutie mark and passing an entrance exam, she moved out of Sire’s Hollow to study at Celestia’s Academy for Gifted Unicorn. She kept in touch through letters home, although they weren’t quite the same and the group deeply missed the one they considered to be an older sister. Sunburst was next to leave, a similar experience occurring, and soon he was shipped off to the same school, letters sent home for each of the friends left behind.
Nightfall would be the next one to earn her cutie mark, although in quite an unusual manner.
As is required by law, an evaluator came to Sire’s Hollow to evaluate the unicorns of age for school placement. Nightfall had yet to earn her mark, like Starlight and Moondancer, just into her preteens. The examination was “simple”, locate the magic relic, an easy enough task for any magically gifted unicorn. Nightfall, however, whether it was due to anxiety or nerves, was unable to sense any aura from the objects laid before her. She tried to concentrate, finally feeling a flicker of aura from what looked like a large river stone, smooth and oblong. “This one!” she pointed to the stone with a hopeful look, only to give a watery smile when the evaluators shook their heads.
She was walked out, the river stone tucked into her satchel because “Your aura has touched it and we can’t use it in the next test.” She fully intended to throw it into the nearby river once her parents were done talking with the evaluators. Nightfall caught sight of her friends waving her down at the end of the path, Sunset and Sunburst home for the summer. She trotted towards them, stopping as they pulled her into a hug, chatting idly about what they’d do for the rest of the afternoon while Nightfall kept glancing back at her parents.
Sunburst pulled her from her thoughts, pointing at something in the distance. Nightfall turned to watch as a wave of rainbow light shot across the sky, a sparking tingle running through her body. The world went dark, she suddenly felt weightless, light. She was just drifting through the void. A voice called, faint and distant. While she couldn’t make out the words, she felt at ease as gravity seemed to return and light slowly filled her vision once more. As she came to, she felt the gentle prodding and shaking.
A weight on her leg made her look down, a small purple creature clinging to her and staring with large, baby eyes. A drool filled smile
