I’m surprised that nobody so far didn’t consider this is a “new” Canterlot, after all it isn’t rare in history for whole locations to move and it would explain why Canterlot, which was previously protected by mountains, would suddenly need a wall with gate.

That seems to be the case the g5 shows tell your tale/make your mark seem to focus on slice of life and adventures of the week while the comics are expanding the connection between g4 and g5

And, thus, the adventure begins.

Gate of the Ancients? That’s a new concept. I’m intrigued to know more about that structure.

Just because she is taller doesn’t mean she is “older”. Just look at her. The only difference is that she is taller and has ethereal mane. But she didn’t age. You can see that by looking at older AJ, RD, Pinkie, Rarity and Fluttershy. None of them became taller like Twilight. Because they were already adults. Adults don’t become taller the older they are. Twilight isn’t older, she is just taller more likely ‘cause of Celestia and Luna’s magic.

Twilight launched democratization of Canterlot. She wanted to promote the common folk’s ways to offset Canterlot’s elite. In other words to spread true friendship to Canterlot’s stodgy ways.

The new style in Canterlot became the one of equality and virtue.

That may be true, we learn a little more from a single page on a comic than on what has come so far after the G5 movie with very few exceptions, within lore building. This gate is very interesting because it can be based on the Italian gate in Siena, with a focus on friendship and love - certainly with inscriptions of Twilight Sparkle - and “open” the city to all visitors.

At the top of it we see a coat of arms with a unicorn head which can be Canterlot’s coat of arms. Canterlot may have been built at Celestia’s request, but it was a unicorn town that had become a residence for the aristocratic unicorns who moved there from all over Equestria. I think it’s because the royal sisters had taken the opportunity after Discord was defeated, to cement their power and centralize Equestria by forcing the nobility to move to Canterlot as with Louis XIV and Versailles in France. Then it is not unexpected that the coat of arms shows a unicorn.

From G4 we know that the ponies have underlying cultural tendencies around statues, gates and walls, strongly supported by the fanon work, and this continues in the G5, they do not close their cities, but they considered a wall with associated gate as something essential to get through. Maretime Bay has a “gate” with a bridge in the street leading to downtown, Bridlewood had a “gate” where there were many warning signs and Zephyr Hills - well, we did not see what the pegasi had. And from the TYT series we have seen the pegasi make a statue of Zipp and Pipp. Statues of ponies were common in G4, and these did not seem to decrease in G5 in the near future.

So “the gate of the ancients” goes straight into the culture of the ponies as a natural outcome, especially after Canterlot had been expanded so that new urban areas had to be built, and a new gate had to be opened. From the G4 movie and S10 we know that Canterlot was shaped by the MLP workers into a kind of circular city under the heavy inspiration of the fanon artist plainoasis. A third “ring” may have been erected by Twilight Sparkle, and this happened after the end of G4.

The pony towns may have had walls in ancient times as protection against external dangers such as monsters and enemies, these had gradually disappeared over the centuries, but the impression had taken hold in the ponies’ consciousness.

Not a wall - a gate. Heard of Porta Camollia in the Italian city of Siena? This street is world famous with its inscription “Siena shows a heart that is bigger than this street” from 1604, which is a favorite place for tourists to visit. Easy to see where the inspiration came from, as you can see cutie marks from all four alicorns and the Mane 6 at the time at the gate - “The gate of the ancients” in Argyle’s words.

From what the drawing shows, it looks like a third gate was built in addition to the other two seen in the G4 movie as Canterlot had been expanded at the end of the S9. And Argyle explained to his daughter that love is important, and that Canterlot will forever be home to all the ponies. That may be what Argyle has found out about the gate of Canterlot.

im sure there a logical reason for the wall and not for the horrible reason people are thinking.
