What would happen is the compressor’s Thermal Safety Switch would trip and shut the compressor off until it cooled down and reset. If the door stayed open this would happen repeatedly. Fancier fridge and freezer models have an alarm that goes off if the door is open for 10 minutes or longer).

Luna, you’ll suffocate! pulls her out
(Up until the late 80s there were PSAs about old fridges needing to be either chained shut or have the doors removed since they used latches with handles. Kids would hide in an old one only to be locked inside and die of suffocation. Newer ones use magnetic sealing strips to hold the door shut so that’s not a problem anymore).
