Wow…. I don’t know what bug jumped up your butt to make you take this accusatory tone with me, but let me set you straight on a couple of things.
First, I’ve lived in Michigan my entire life. Thus I was clearly not far away while this crisis unfolded. In fact, I have to live with the fact that I helped elect one of the public officials who perpetrated this crisis.
There’s nothing blown out of proportion here, and it was (and still is) a public health crisis. I’m sorry you think elevating the blood-lead level of 100,000 people via criminal actions of government employees is ‘minor’.
YOUR claim:
The irony of that is Flint has gotten a really good water filtration system since that crisis took place.
is completely incorrect. Filtration was NEVER added to the Flint water plant, or even considered an option, because it wouldn’t have solved the problem, which was the leaching of lead into the water lines between the water mains and houses.
As for what I think is safe to drink, I use filters with every municipal supply I’ve ever had at my residences, out of precaution.

You seem to be almost unnecessarily critical of not only Flint but also Michigan. Also, I wasn’t looking for the ‘details’, I just wanted to make the point that it is no longer dangerous to drink that water. Those that do think it is dangerous (like you) don’t live in Michigan at all. Instead they take news reports (as you likely did) and blew the whole thing out of proportion.
Then again, that happens with a lot of news. Minor issues end up getting escalated far beyond their scope when they are reported.

The actual story is much more nuanced than that. But the main points were these:
  • Water mains in Flint, most laid in the first half of the 20th Century, were constructed of cast iron. But the lines connecting homes to the mains were made of lead, because it was cheaper and easier to work with. A few lines were galvanized steel, which doesn’t last forever, and eventually the zinc will flake off and expose the steel below.
  • In April 2014, the city government switched Flint from Detroit City water, which it had been using since 1967 (?), to Flint River water. It was thought that the switch to a local source would save money, and at the time, the local government was in a financial crisis.
  • The Flint water plant added WAY too much chlorine to the Flint River water, in an effort to kill bacteria.
  • To save even more money, and an item of litigation to this day IIRC, the plant didn’t add orthophosphate to the treated water. Orthophosphate is absolutely necessary when you have old lead lines in a water supply, because it forms a protective layer inside the pipes, and prevents the lead from leaching into the water.
  • The combination of excessive chlorine with zero orthophosphate resulted in the protective layer that WAS in the pipes breaking down, in both lead and galvanized pipes – the chlorine attacked the steel under the zinc coating of the galvanized pipes, and was the cause of much of the orange-brown tint and stench to the water that many residents experienced. Of course, with the protective layer gone from the lead pipes, the lead poisoning of thousands of people resulted.
  • Flint switched back to the Detroit city water in October 2015.
  • The local and state governments have worked hard to replace all lead and galvanized service lines throughout the city since the crisis, and failed…. But the crisis catalyzed a statewide effort to replace lead lines, one which continues to this day.
There’s much more detail to the story, involving government corruption, collusion, greed, outright lies, deception, and apathy. The only ‘mistake’ the victims made was living in Flint.
As to whether it’s safe to drink the water there now, it actually varies by location. Not all lead or galvanized lines have been replaced, IIRC. But if you know your house line has been inspected and found to be NOT lead, or it’s been replaced, then I’d say it’s safe. I’d still run it through filtration before I drank it, just to be safe, but that goes for virtually anywhere.

The irony of that is Flint has gotten a really good water filtration system since that crisis took place. Meaning that water in that city is perfectly safe to drink.
