Honestly, i can see it working for other people, but in my case i have to overthink everything, that is the only way things work out.
Instead of really focusing on the cliche of the episode, I was looking at how incredibly well the characters fit the mold of the conflict and how they learned from it. As well as just how intriguing the subject matter was with what was essentially the pony version of 3-on-3 hoops. Pinkie, Rainbow, and Fluttershy had never played the game before, and yet Pinkie and Fluttershy turned out to be better than experienced athletes. One of them actually knowing the game inside and out. Because, their playstyles cleverly fit more naturally into this game. For example, I was watching how Rainbow Dash was playing as the goalie, versus how Fluttershy was playing. And, Rainbow Dash spent too much time swooping around to catch Pinkie’s shots, while Fluttershy played more gracefully and reserved to properly block Applejack’s. And, the best part of that was how Rainbow and Applejack admitted with humility that they played it better. As experienced athletes, they could see that Fluttershy and Pinkie Pie had more solid playstyles. And, it makes sense that they would then conclude that pushing them with goals and training would only make them better. Because it’s what worked for them. A very honest mistake. Good intentions, but just not the way to get Pinkie and Fluttershy perform any better. Their mindsets were different in a completely in-character way.
And, I just love how Rainbow and Applejack were the ones that really enforced the moral, while Pinkie and Futtershy couldn’t understand why they were failing. The ones who really made the mistakes, realized what they were doing wrong, and made up for it in a clever, logical, and good natured fashion. I also loved the animations and character interactions in this one. Fluttershy’s goalie skills were very believable with the way they animated her. And, of course, Snails was an absolutely fantastic inclusion. Supplementing the moral further by being the one who was the neutral party from the start. Not only having the episode teach that having fun could be the way to do better than working with pressure, but also that not thinking about the pressure makes that easier.
