Being safe is important, and having regulations is important.

But the corruption of safety regulation is insidious. How safe is too safe? They’ll say there’s no such thing as “too safe”. Which works out for regulators and such, who constantly have job security and more and more ways to impose fines for violations. If you laden down a organization with so many regulations and impediments to production that they need to begin cutting corners and violating regulations just to keep up production, then you have more opportunities to catch them in violation and fine them.

But the idea of maximizing safety is too sacrosanct to criticize. Just like all those nonprofit orgs that work to solve problems: if you solve the problem, the money flow goes away. So whats the incentive to solve the problem?
