I thought about Hittler when I read that

As I see it, Chrysalis is a benevolant, caring ruler but one that sees herself and her own race as superior to others.
 
Thus she does not care so much for the wellbeing and safety of other races, for to her, other races are but mere obstacles, a resource or an ant to be crushed.
 
One can still be a compassionate, caring person while also being a stern and brutal leader. I wouldn’t perhaps say she’s good (Most of us can probably agree that Celestia, Luna, Twilight and the others are “Good” in almost every definition of the word) but rather that she’s cold-hearted leader that only cares about her own race and little else.

It’s possible to be evil beyond the point of sympathy and still have sympathetic motives. Perhaps Chrysalis began as a queen who wanted an ideal life for her people and her good intentions devolved over time into what we see in the show.

She mentioned she had done the whole thing before, that’s where I got it from. But probably not, considering the show. Though if you read the comics and take those as canon it would appear she had her changelings kill the luvcats ( though that is porbably be reading too much into it)

Genocide? Where do you get that from? She’d need to keep them alive to feed off of their love.

This. I think this is exactly how I would’ve said it myself. Her duty? yes. Did she do so in the right/moral way? No. Coming from someone who truly loves her as a character, I’m actually a little tired of people trying to justify her sinister acts by saying she was only doing it because she had to, for her subjects.
 
But, with that said, as I’ve told you guys before, the pure malice that makes up her character is a trait that of hers I love <3

It is an individual’s choice whether to fulfill their duty correct? This being said, Queen Chrysalis was definitely evil. Awesome though.

True. Though sometimes it is neat to just have a villain who’s just plain evil, regardless of their reasons for being such.

That’s why I don’t like pure black/white good/evil. The whole “this individual and their followers are objectively evil and this one is objectively good”. I know you pretty much need a line defined that well in a kid’s cartoon but honestly taking both sides and blending them into differing shades of gray would probably do a better service to children’s intellect(and usually makes a more compelling story anyway).

Yep she had a duty to her people. But she was still a heartless, arrogant, egotistical, beast bent on conquer and possibly genocide. Not helped by the fact she mentioned she had done that whole song and dance multiple times before.

Goddammit, why can’t we appreciate awesome villains AS awesome villains? >:( I don’t need my villain to be Draco Malfoy for him to be cool; indeed, that’d diminish his coolness!
