On /r/horses, the consensus on blanketing horses during the winter is not to do it unless you know they need it (such as working horses whose winter coats are clipped short to prevent them from sweating during work and having the sweat freeze after and elderly+malnourished horses). Instead, give them as much hay as they please and easy access to shelters from the wind, then they will have no trouble regulating their own temperature.
I have heard a blanket can actually interfere with the floofling up of the coat to trap air, thus making the horse LESS insulated. Donβt remember were in the Brony history I saw the comment, but I do recall that it mentioned something about the surprising degree of fluffiness exhibited by a member of the species in a cold environment.
Iβve heard of horses being described as 1500-lb rabbits, so you may be on to something.
I did not know that, very interesting. For my research on a particular project Iβll have to see if other animals also do this, I would suspect rabbits based on what little I know of them.
