You’ve never owned a bird, have you? Very rarely does preening involve removing feathers, and then only if one is broken. I’ve known birds to not even remove broken feathers for weeks. Preening usually consists of cleaning the feathers off with their beak, a slow, careful process.
She’s preening. It’s always been represented like this in the fandom: removing the unwanted feathers.
