I must correct you here: Putin doesn’t believe that Ukraine is Russian, he believes that Russians and Ukrainians are one people, tied with same history, trials and achievements. And he doesn’t mind Ukrainians having their own country, as long as Ukraine defends its own national interests and respects common Russian-Ukrainian history… which it doesn’t. If you’re interested, you can read his article named “On historical unity of Russians and Ukrainians”, you can find an English version on the internet easily. I know it was written in 2021, and A LOT of things have changed since then, but the article still seems more or less relevant nowadays.
Doesn’t mean it’s rightful russian land, that’s like saying the US is rightfully part of Britain because it was once a british colony
