Never do any of those things. Pick a color palette that goes together and is interesting. Stick with the basic races. Pick a pony-sounding name. Have a backstory that is somewhat typical. I like to use this site for color palettes:

Alicorn OCs are just never really well received. There’s only ever been one alicorn OC that’s been well received by the fandom and that’s Lauren Faust’s ponysona. But then, that’s because it’s Lauren Faust. Even the other staff members don’t get alicorn ponysonas.
