Description

Uploading a WIP of my latest car pinup I’ve been working on over the past month and a bit, so that my Derpibooru audience can see what I’m up to! I felt like making a new wallpaper to replace the Scootaloo F1 piece I made a year or so ago, and seeing how I’m mostly racing GT cars in racing games now rather than open wheelers, I decided to go for the 720S GT3 in Jenson Team Rocket’s white, black and green livery. And who else to pair with a black and green car other than Lightning Dust?
There’s an insane level of detail here already and I’m not quite done with the interior details yet, so if you like what you see so far feel free to check me out and stay tuned for the finished artwork!

Part of why I didn’t reply sooner is because I wanted to take an in-depth look at your WIP folder, but now that link seems to be dead or unaccessible… ;_;
I recently responded to another comment on here, I took down all of my art from Google Drive due to a recent change in their policy surrounding AI that I was not happy with. I’m looking for alternative options to host images and files that won’t cost me too much if I need to pay, but 15GB of free storage space will be very hard to beat, I was getting close to the limit but I still had a few GB left before I would have needed to pay for more space.
Dropbox isn’t an option, they too are also planning on using stuff uploaded on their service to train an AI model, yet all these companies aren’t happy with their own things being used for AI and thus are massive hypocrites. I wish this trend of AI models being everywhere would die already, because I’d argue in quite a few cases it’s being used solely as a gimmick rather than something that has actual tangible benefits to the user/customer experience.
If you happen to have Discord, I’m more than happy to send you the WIPs that were on there in DMs for you to have a look at. You can either join my server, or add me directly (@clearvision)
But even as someone who couldn’t tell a Lotus Elise from a Lotus Exige
That’s probably not the best comparison to make, but I get your point. An Exige is just a factory-tuned Elise that’s more track focused, and the only immediately apparent differences you might see if you pay attention are wheels, rear wing, front canards etc.
While I enjoy a good racing game more than the average person, I was never too I to the cars themselves, so on that end, I guess I’m guilty as charged - my focus is mostly on the characters :P
It’s completely fine to be more into the racing itself if that’s what you like, I’m more in the middle actually. Wouldn’t consider myself to be a huge car geek, but I do know a thing or two about them and I would prefer to race them rather than just talking about them.
However, I give the car just as much attention in my art pieces as the characters, rather than treating it as a background element
I really wanna figure out anatomy/construction, but my motivation has been low for a while now…
But, your reply helped a lot <3
Motivation is a struggle for many artists. There isn’t a particular way to reignite the spark, but a somewhat unconventional suggestion I have is to try to make an art piece that you can specifically use as a desktop wallpaper so that it feels like it’s a reward for yourself. Or try making some art that is incredibly self indulgent. I finished this piece with Lighting in May, and I’m using it as a wallpaper on my gaming setup - and it looks great!

@Clear Vision
A comment of such epic proportions that it took me 3 months to respond :O
So yeah uh, thanks for the super in-depth response! Part of why I didn’t reply sooner is because I wanted to take an in-depth look at your WIP folder, but now that link seems to be dead or unaccessible… ;_;
I’m super interested in seeing the process there. The construction and guidelines, but especially the lighting - you know someone’s putting in some serious effort when they take the time to figure out the ambient occlusion of a piece!

But even as someone who couldn’t tell a Lotus Elise from a Lotus Exige, I love that you put such effort into the cars you draw. Cool cars are cool, even when you don’t know too much about em, and I think your dedication is awesome <3
And thank you for checking out my stuff and giving some pointers! I really wanna figure out anatomy/construction, but my motivation has been low for a while now…
But, your reply helped a lot <3

Sometimes. I may not bother with it if I’m just drawing a character on their own in a simple scene and I already know what I want (e.g >>3046240 or >>3068604) but for more complex scenes or car pinups, I typically use Clip Studio Paint’s built-in 3D models to help with composition and/or posing. An idea may not always look as good as it did in your head so being able to see a rough concept of it first is a massive help and saves you having a headache later trying to make it look closer to how you imagined it. If you want to know a bit more about my drawing process, feel free to carry on reading as I’ll explain it in a bit more detail.

This pose is what I originally pictured, but it didn’t look good as I hoped. However, I figured it would look a lot better and sexier if I leaned her head back and put her free hand into her hair like this, and it very much does.
CSP has a generic car model that kinda looks like an old Mercedes, but I also have a few car models of my own to cover a few different types of typical car shapes. I have a McLaren F1 model, but the 720S is considerably bigger, longer and bulkier (more so with the GT3 kit on it!) so to draw that I’ve primarily relied on IRL photos and a lot of in-game screencaps from both Assetto Corsa titles. I’m honestly quite proud of how accurate it looks.
I’ve composed a folder on Google Drive showing all the exported WIPs I have, and seeing them in succession shows off my process even better. You’ll see how the car started out as nothing more other than a box with wheels and a centre line sketch, and you’ll also see how I started and refined LD - particularly around her face, hands, arms, wings and making her butt a tiny bit bigger because I felt like it and I know that’s where people are gonna look despite the massive effort I’ve put into the car
Right now I’m sorting out the ambient occlusion of the piece, and after that I’m going to make a race suit version and give her a hint of muscle tone. It takes a lot of energy and motivation to make car pinups this way but the results are almost always 100% worth it for me because you can end up with some truly amazing looking art pieces, and the people who do like my car stuff tend to be quite vocal about it.
Decided to have a peek at your stuff as well, your most recent stuff doesn’t look bad either. Try adding guidelines to define the form and direction of a shape (arms and legs) if you feel like your sketches are too flat. It can even help you with shading as well, because you’ll have a reference for the curved surface of an object
I hope you’ll find this helpful and insightful!

Oh WOW, seeing the sketch/construction lines explains how your drawings look so flawless (almost 3d rendered)
Do you use any sort of 3d models for reference, if you don’t mind me asking? (If not, that’s impressive, if yes, that’s just as impressive; I’m just curious)

gee if only there were a way for you to filter the images you see so you don’t have to see characters you dislike, perhaps by hovering your mouse over the tag containing the character’s name and clicking an option that tells the website to conceal any posts containing this character from your view. but as far as I know, there is no option on this website to do that particular thing, someone should really get on that I might even talk to staff about implementing this new revolutionary concept of a feature
