NM Rarity was actually teaching Spike a lesson here. “He could never get the words out.” Even on the show, it took a life threatening situation before he tried to confess.
 
I loved that part where he said “you’re not my Rarity!”

And Rarity was infatuated with Blueblood and dreamed about marrying him. It was still an infatuation.
 
Maybe Spike meant it in the romantic sense (not sure how much it would be worth even if he did though, since he’s very young and naive, or innocent if you prefer) and maybe he didn’t, but even if you completely took away his crush on Rarity he’d still love her, just like he loves Twilight and again, the others. This is going to be one of those cases where people are going to see what they want to see in this, all I am saying is that this doesn’t need to be interpreted purely as a declaration of romantic love. The mane 6, and Spike, ALL love each other very much as friends and in an almost familial context.

Yeah…except that on his dreams he visualized getting married with her…so yeah…

I think some of the characters have told each other that they love each other before in the show… it doesn’t have to be romantic love, because obviously Spike cares about Rarity deeply (and Twilight, just as much if not more, and the other ponies). I’m pretty sure he’d risk his life for any one of them.

Always in the show Spike’s feeling for Rarity always as been refered as a “crush”
 
However this is the first time that He actually says “I love you”…
