Misty’s initial reaction of shock about it, and Opaline’s wicked smile earlier indicated to me it was the first time.
Which led to my theory she was holding back this kind of fraction of affection as a “trump card” in the event Misty did come across any kindness. With Misty so wrapped up in Stockholm Syndrome, Opaline showing this bit of niceness, it’s likely Misty will take it as an outpouring of love and a sign of Opaline’s “love”.
What makes it especially disgusting, at least to me, is that giving some love and even appreciation costs nothing, not even costing a lot of time. Yet Opaline is like doing it as a minimum requirement, and held back, only as needed. And if this is indeed the first time, it shows how deep the co-dependency really is.

Keep in mind a few panels back where Misty tried to mention that she does try to communicate what she needs, but was cut off by Opaline. All this is deflection on top of belittling the kindness Misty received from others.

It’s not cute not at all. Did you forget that the day before Opaline a). was starving Misty and b). actually hit her (and based on Misty’s reaction, that probably wasn’t the first time either)?
Even if we assume that Opaline is being genuine right now- and that’s a very, very big if, that in no way makes up for anything that she has done.
I think it’s quite the opposite, and based on Misty’s reaction, it was the first time.

Of course Opaline doesnt see this as gaslighting. She see it as teaching to influence her as future co ruler of Equestria. Its just Misty is not able to become cruel and despotic and she will sooner die from this training. Opaline is demented but in some way she does see Misty as something more than a throw away tool. She’s jst disgusted with her weakness.

I think i understand what’s about to happen. Ponies from Maretime Bay will want to convince Misty to abandon Opaline while she herself will be gaslighted to defend her Drunken Dad character. The main struggle in abusive household is not getting rid of the parent, but convincing the child that they are in a bad situation and make them confess to the abuse. If this was that easy, Misty would just run away and lived anywhere else.

She isn’t wrong. Considering she suppose to one day rule entire ponykind like Celestia did, but with force. Misty might be her replacement so she want her to be as callous and relentless as she is. What Opaline wants is basically Diamond Tiara or Cozy Glow as daughter while what she sees is Fluttershy and she hates it. And that’s why she abuses her because she can’t stand weakness and meek ponies.
