Description

hello i have some strong feelings about how littlepip is often designed.
I think the first design, how she’s often drawn, is easy. It’s easy to look at and understand and especially easy to animate, which I assume was part of the point, but…I don’t like it. I think it’s incoherent, I think it clashes, I don’t think there’s much real decision behind why the colours are the way that they are. Plus I don’t like plain, genuine grey on characters (blue makes it look brown, brown makes it look blue, it’s just not very good at doing what you want it to do.) it echoes a lot of early community show design puritanism for me, and I’m just not very fond of it, and the same goes for a lot of the OG designs of the FOE characters.
Is my design neccecarily right? no, but that’s how I like to draw murder horse. I like how scars can show how long she might have been in the wasteland, what sort of a pony she is, pointing is a personal taste but all the colours on there are coherent and chosen for a reason. They’re all warm, and don’t clash, the green goes with how I draw green on pipbucks, the pointing is more horse-y (and just something I like to add to my characters) and it isn’t boring.
Is it easy to animate/simple? No, but it can be. I’ll always be a browngrey littlepip drawer, I want to get to a point where I make little sheets like this for a lot of FOE characters.
I also hate BlackJack’s design with a burning passion and want to redesign her, please for the love of god pure white on characters is not and is never good a a a a (I’m kidding, make whatever design choices you want it’s free real estate)
also, have my thoughts on blackjack. Soley aestetics based since I have not read that fic

Littlepip’s colors represents the vault.
Steel grey is the drab walls of the stable, the brown in her mane is the dirt/rock they are buried under. Green eyes for the green screen of pipbuck.
LP is never described in the book, but the commonly drawn version is the reason i believe.

thank you!! I always imagined Calamity being smaller than velvet, just because I imagine velvet as a big lady. I think some funky markings on him would be cool, I also really like it when he’s drawn with facial hair.

Your Littlepip looks like she’s an older wastelander warrior, yee. Hellmare! Burn Arbu!
Minus the scars all over her face (Only the neck one is remarkable), your design could be perfectly canon too.

honestly it’s just a stylistic choice - I find it easy to read as “horse”, at least to the same degree that mlp ponies are, like let’s be real they’re so far removed, even down to things like the joints on the back legs, forward facing eyes, shortened bodies, Flesh Hooves, no fetlocks, etc etc. Like we can slap a horn, wings, bat wings etc on it and somehow it’s still a pony, even if it’s cloe That’s how I like to draw them, with my personal taste in artists leaning more towards styles that move away from the show like yakovlev-vad and syruppy who sometimes don’t draw noses on ‘em at all. Just personal taste though, really! I’ll for sure take the nostril thing into account though, that’s kind of interesting.
I think it kind of just comes down to personal taste. If you prefer more show accurate colorations and styles? That’s valid!

I really disagree on the “free real estate” part, but that’s been a pet peeve of mine with a lot of fanart for a long time. Not to pick on you in particular, but if it wasn’t for the horn, what would sell these headshots to the unfamiliar viewer as “pony” instead of “cute doggie?”
I understand the choices that were made in their show design, and it was for the sake of making them readable as cartoon characters, emoting like people. They’re still horses, however cutesy and stylized.
For example, the nostrils in the FiM style are u-shaped rather than n-shaped because horse nostrils curve out and to the sides, like pant pockets, so the shading is different. If they were forward-pointing holes in a blunt wall with a fleshy overhang, like cats or dogs, then the n-shaped nostrils would be appropriate shorthand for the way light hits those surface features. But it doesn’t fit on horses, because light doesn’t fall that way on horse nostrils. By simply changing the direction of the curve for the nostrils, it changes the entire sculpture of the nose away from the underlying horse anatomy. Even small details like “drawing a U for the nostrils” was thought out in advance for the show.
Horses also don’t have tufts of fluffy fur poking out at the angles of their contours. I’ve seen a lot of people draw them with a split philtrum like kitties, probably because they don’t know any different. But all of that conspires to fight the underlying “horse” part of their designs, rather than communicate it through the layers of abstraction.
FiM faces and heads are already heavily anthropomorphized and cartoony, but in a way that conveys simplified horse shapes with human-centric emotional cues. Round heads with diminutive, softer snouts for most mare designs, and more angular and enlarged shapes for most stallions; enormous eyes to make them appealingly cute and expressive. Big ears for the same reason. But below all that, the basic plan is still “horse.”
People who draw them like fluffy dogs or cats are taking what’s already a really abstracted, anthropomorphized horse and turning it into something else entirely that makes it hard to read as “horse.” So mixing in those other traits kind of loses the plot, if you take my meaning. I get the impression that people are just more familiar with canines and felines so that’s what they default to drawing even when it’s supposed to be a horse.
Anyway, thanks for coming to my TED talk I’ll shut up now.

To be fair by the end of the story she gets shot up and cut up and all sorts of wounded. So depicting Little Pip as clean when it’d be a scene supposedly mid-adventure or towards the end does end up mis-representing the character visually.

agreed! I was going to attatch versions for her fresh out the stable compared to towards the end of the fic, but more or less ran out of time. There is an alternate version of her without the scars! My main gripe with her original design is the colours, the grey ends up looking blue and I don’t gel with it

oh! I didn’t know she had that character detail! Then again, I couldn’t get past chapter 1, so it’d be lying if I said I had any clue about her canonical visual appearance.

I don’t know, I kind of disagree - pip did live a sheltered life for the most part, so I think using scars as visual storytelling could be really interesting and introduces a lot of potential - it shows what sort of a pony she is, getting into fights and scraps and fighting for what she thought was right was a big part of her character. Designs that are busy for the sake of being busy, yes, but I don’t think that’s the case when design choices have meanings behind them, even if it’s just to break up the colours a bit or to direct attention somewhere else, especially considering actual horses don’t tend to be solid colour.
And totally agreed, the simplified design for sure mirrors that of the show, which is kind of my point of thinking that show accurate designs somewhat limit creativity for things like markings. I prefer to stray away from this in my own art, since it isn’t aiming for the simplified and easy to replicate style of FIM. I do like how the original design for pip kind of acts like a timestamp, like you can pinpoint around the time it was made for the character design conventions of the time, but I don’t know how well it really aged. My main gripe is the colours, though. I just think they clash and she ends up looking blue, rather than grey.
My style strays from the show in general, especially in this example where it’s very quickly done. Though, my usual style is also more boxy and angular, but then again the show is so far away from horses anyways that it’s kind of free real estate.

Honestly I think the trend for scars, paints, and freckles is one of* the more annoying things in the online art world.
It just comes across as busy for the sake of being busy. Especially for a character who canonically led as very sheltered (relatively) life for the most part.
Yes, Pipp’s design is very simple. It’s intentionally aping the FiM style, which was simplified for the sake of anthropomorphism, stylization, and the needs of Flash animation. This makes sense as it’s an homage intended to take elements of FiM and use them for its incongruously dark story.
The alternate color design I don’t have a problem with.
If we’re getting nit-picky about visual design, I could point out that these pony faces are drawn with the contours and visual language like that of typical “furry” canines instead of overly-stylized horses.
*That and ruby red noses/ears on humans, and charcoal grey fur with dayglo highlights on dogs.

Interesting. I like!
I can see a “fresh out of the Stable” Lilpip looking like she does on the left, then, after she’s spent some time in the Wastes, her appearance shifting more towards the right.

I have seen BJ depicted and Pip depicted as they are on the right side of these images.
As far as I know, if you change Pip’s eyes to brown, the right side is actually the original view of Littlepip, you just kept the green eyes that were adapted later. Pip was often given the dullest, plainest colours. It was only after Kkat accepted a different intpretation she lost the warmer, dirtier look.
I would guess that the reason for the changes is to make Littlepip sort of “pop,” In order to be more like the show colours. In truth, until Kkat decided on the left side, we had no idea what pip looked like.
As for Blackjack, I always figured the reason they go with the left side is because that makes her look like a playing chip (for poker or for blackjack, a betting chip. fits with “ante up”).

ya, the story is a slog, It has a lot of good parts, and the setting is fun, but it’s unfortunately dragged down by lots of bad things in the story. Oh BTW, her name isn’t actually Black Jack, it’s Go Fish. XP
as for your design for her. it’s a lot more subtle, but not braking the card design, though I’d have the darker part of the mane be a bit darker, also, BJ actually has a small horn, but that’s nitpicking at this point.

I do agree with you on most parts, if not all. And ya, the simplicity is part of the point, since I think Pip was never meant to be all that memorable looking storywize, unlike Velvet. Most ponies would have remebered her for her pipbuck/pipbuck cutie-mark, how short she is compered to other adults, and her foul mouth. She was just not all the charsmatic, nor did she even realy try to be. I also think living in the stable likely drained her of some color, and had her blend into all the gray of the concret walls.
That all said, nothing says that she doesn’t gains color on her adventure. Once leaving the stable, experancing life and finding her vertue, the deary Littlepip becmes something a bit warmer.
That be an interesting thing to do, show Littlepip as she changes, starting form how she is normaly depicted, to how she could have visualy changed.
Side note, on Blackjack, theirs sadly more wrong with her character then just her design, though I’m sure it’s based on a deck of cards, that’s why her mane is red and black on pure white.
