It didn’t work as well on them because they were motivated by money.  
RD and Flutters had FRIENDSHIPS(!!!) for motiveation.

Those stallions were very motivated too when they heard they get more payment. But i know its only a story thing or the cart of AJ was really heavy or the stallions tired/etc. What was important was that they managed to get AJ, not the scientific facts how they did so.^^

Probably a combination of 1)Dash and Flutters being more motivated and 2) Dash being a freak of nature that’s way stronger than she should be? :-P

I still wonder how 4 earth pony stallions could be slower than two pegasi mares. Espically since Shy and RD pulled three ponies and the four only one. Normally those 4 should have been stronger and faster than Shy and RD. Expect that cart really weighed much more than it looks like.
