The End wasn't The End - Found a new home after the great exodus of 2012

@Background Pony

Well, magic tricks would be stuff that’s meant to be entertaining, showy (like fireworks, making flowers appear like real-life magicians, and even the thunderbolt can be included). Regular magic would be any kind of it, not restricted to a certain area.

Rarity also uses her magic to lift and move around things frequently and with great dexterity, and we’ve seen her do a dress out of a curtain instantly. And even though her job is making dresses, her talent is more like image/beauty, we’ve seen her cutting bushes in the shapes of ponies, provide her own special effects for a fashion show (the one that was in her house) and make herself look like crystal pony. But anyways, the point is that she can make great use of her limited magic by creating, just like Trixie can make use of it by performing.

If you don’t “buy that”, that’s the customer’s problem, not the product’s. (Her looks also aren’t something special)

Her boasting goes hand-in-hand with her narcissism and ego-centrism (not to mention that they were the central point of the episode, Boast Busters). Her rudeness and apatheticness are other issues, but not the ones discussed right now. And it was her boasting the catalyst to the other’s critiques, and hence the plot.

Define for me the difference between magic ‘tricks’ and just plain magic. I dont see any difference. I only see calling her magic ‘tricks’ as a way of stating its not real, proper magic.

Also Rarity doesnt use magic excessively. She uses her gem spell, and thats more or less it. Its not exactly a big part of her career. Trixie on the other hand has built her entire life around magic - and i dont buy the idea shes more of a performer than a scholar (since this is D&D magic fueled by book smarts, and she could have just been an actress or something else with her looks).

Maybe if Trixie had focused on that she wouldn’t have turned into a braggart.

This is one something of an unrelated note, but do you never feel like maybe the bragging part of Trixie’s personality is… overstated? Not that she isnt bragging, but it seems like in the face of all her other personality traits (shes morally apathetic at best, insulting, elitist, self-centered, mildly sadistic and a complete egomaniac) her actual boasting always struck me as relatively innoffensive. Hell, her worst case of it when she claims to have defeated the Ursa is something she only says AFTER shes attempted to use her magic to basically assault a load of showgoers. And even then she doesnt seem particularly into it - she just seems to use it as a basic ‘alright now, shut the fuck up and let me work’. Its like its almost her last resort to get people to shut up and let her get back to being narcissistic.

In the face of all that, i find it weird people refer to her as a braggart like thats the worst of what she is. Im constantly surprised no one calls her out on her sadism or narcissism or anything else really.

Good. Now find the part where I said that just because Trixie’s magic isn’t on Twilight’s uber-level means that her magic is bad.

When I’m saying that her talent is magic tricks, I mean that she’s pretty talented at doing magic of that kind. Rarity isn’t on Twilight’s level, but she isn’t worried about by it, because she knows where she excels at, and when she uses her magic on that area it’s really impressive.

Maybe if Trixie had focused on that she wouldn’t have turned into a braggart.

Comparing like that was exactly my point. The claim that Trixie doesnt use ‘real magic’ and Twilight does is proven complete nonsense by giving examples of powerful spells done by Trixie and weak spells done by Twilight. In reality - theyre both just god damn mages.

Im not arguing Twilight isnt both more powerful and more knowledgable. I just think its stupid for people to go around claiming Trixie doesnt have a magical special talent or that she can only use tricks when she has shown off powerful magic.

Twilight is basically the chosen one of this world. Shes born rich and educated from birth, by the Eternal Sun Goddess and gifted with something called the Element of Magic. Of course Trixie doesnt compare with that.

But claiming that just because a pony doesnt compare with the grand manifestation of Magic on Earth she shouldnt be considered a mage at all just seems like spitting in Trixie’s face. There can be more than one god damn mage in this world.

Jeez. Do you think this is how Luna felt 1000 years ago compared to Celestia? If Trixie goes Nightmare LulaMoon on everyone (again) i cant say ill even blame her.

I like the idea that Trixie’s special talent is “Showmanship,” not magic. If Trixie was not inclined to use magic (for whatever reason) I imagine she’d be something like a Vaudeville performer.

Yep, using the most impressive spell Trixie has done and one of the least impressive in Twilight’s repertoire. Surely a fair comparison.

Twilight has practiced a lot of spells without Celestia’s assistance, she can perform very powerful magic because that’s her talent. Maybe Trixie has some talent above making fireworks and thunderbolts, but she nowhere near Twilight’s level. If we’re going by dubious comparisons, compare Trixie’s magic wand cutie mark to Twilight’s burst of magic. And Trixie was pretty much Twilight’s opposite, a big ego without the magic to back it up against someone powerful but humble.
Great And Powerful Trixie

The plot thickens!

Okay let’s see if I can work this into my “Trixie is secretly a robot that uses nanomachines to make it look like she’s magic” theory:

Saying Trixie went to Celestia’s School For Gifted Unicorns is an understatement. Rather, she was MADE at the school. One filly particularly talented in the ways of SCIENCE didn’t have the magic to hatch a dragon egg, so instead she tried to make a robot dragon to fool the judges. Well dragons are kinda rare, and she hadn’t seen one - all she knew about them was that they had long tails and purple coats, and were exceptionally boastful.

Well when Trixie was created, she kinda got lost in the school. It was a very big school. So big, that nobody actually noticed a new blue pony had started attending classes. In the end, she passed with flying colours - not so much because of her fake magic, and much more because the administration couldn’t find her exam results (since she wasn’t actually registered), and didn’t want it to look like they were responsible for losing something so important.

The science filly in question failed the enterance exam. Naturally. But that’s fine because she wasn’t that fond of magic anyway. Eventually, she set up a school of her own, teaching science in a universe that decided obeying the laws of physics was optional. She later went on to accidentally create the Ursa Major while trying to make a scale model of the solar system.

Quick! Whats the difference between magic that causes lightning to fly out of the sky or change mane colour and magic that grows mustaches? Apparently one is a phony magic trick and the other is ‘real’ magic - because there is some sort of difference apparently.

Get lost. Trixie has just as much of a magic CM as Twilight does. Thats her point. Shes Dick Twilight. But Twilight was taught by princess Celestia herself. Trixie wasnt - and i dont by the jazz about her going to the Special Unicorn school too (other ponyanons have explained the problems better than i can down the page).
Background Pony #9F7E
Trixie’s talent is magic. As with Twilight, as with all Unicorns with a talent like that, all magic is open to her. But schools of magic can only be mstered through focused study.

I imagine that Trixie double-majored in stage magic and glamour.

Trixie’s talent is magic… tricks. Maybe she seemed like someone with magic potential but eventually she didn’t and had to get out of school.

(I cant believe im writing even more, but i totally ignored your question.)

So figure that Twilight just wasn’t sociable enough to remember Trixie and Trixie was too conceited to remember anypony?

I reckon its still more likely Trixie and Twi just werent there at the same time. The moment Trixie found out about a special student shed try and find her. Thats how she is. Maybe she was only there for a short amount of time or something. Or maybe one is slightly younger/older than the other.

I just dont think its conceivably realistic for them to have both been there at the same time and not know one another when both would be top level students and both are pretty noticable in their own ways (extremely crazy high achiever with huge magic reserves vs extremely crazy narccist asshole with huge ego).
clockworkinsomniac

@TheAntiCat

Well i wouldnt call her a screwup exactly…

Well.. okay. She is. But i do take the view that its mostly not her fault.

Not to say shes a good pony. While not evil shes clearly megalomaniacal, narcissistic and mildly sadistic.

But at the same time shes legitimately intelligent/talented with magic and seems to basically just not to have the same good luck the protagonists enjoy. When Rainbow boasts her friends take her down a peg. When Rarity lies no one finds out and it doesnt matter. When Trixie boasts and lies she has her entire life and livelihood ruined and pissed on with the shattered remains of her reputation.

The reason i support the whole ‘kicked out of University’ idea is because it fits so deliciously well. She was smart enough to stay in, do well and then got kicked out because her luck is shit and her entire life is shit.

Tl;DR - shes a total dick. But i honestly cant blame her one iota when fate seems to be focusing on making her life terrible and another pony exists to basically be her alternate universe much better version.

I love your idea about Trixie just being a screwup and a gypsy. It fits with what we’ve seen in-show.

Yeah, but spike was social enough and well… Trixie is more than pretty damn noticable and damn competitive. Surely they couldnt have lived in the same couple of hundred meters without meeting at least once. Besides. We know Twi still knew ponies about school. She just never went to their parties like Spike did.

Another option is that she is simply not the same age group. But i honestly cant see her having gone there without something fucking up. And that something might as well be to do with her being a piss-poor gypsy - who cant pay her way into an elite university in the capital - since it seems to be the general case for her life so far.

Did Twilight actually stay at CS4GU?

I had the impression she studied with Celestia at the castle, hence why Trixie didn’t even know/recognize her when the former (Trixie) arrived in Ponyville during Season 1.

My headcanon is that because Twilight did such a bangup job at her entrance exam and became Celestia’s protege, Twilight’s classes were all private.

Twilight and Trixie never met simply because Twi was never in the classroom.
clockworkinsomniac

If this is true - which it technically isnt until its in the show, thats how this stuff works im afraid - i agree it needs some explaining on how they never met one another (im assuming they are the same age, because all ponies who look it seem to be lol).

For a start Trixie cant really have flunked. Her special talent is literally Magic. She cant BE bad at it, and shes still the single most skilled magic user weve seen who wasnt a) a physical god or b) empowered by something called the element of Magic (that might help a lil methinks).

My take is that she got in for a while, something went wrong and she got forced to leave. Maybe she set another student on fire. Shes clearly got no family or friends to support her in a clearly expensive school - maybe she was bluffing her way through the bills and got found out.

My personal headcanon right now is that the school had a scholarship program set up to make sure poor ponies who had talent were educated properly to make sure Tia didnt miss out on her EoH. When Twilight was discovered the program was cancelled and the gypsy got kicked out on her ass.

Sort of crappy - but you cant argue it doesnt perfectly fit how Trixies life seems to go. Shes like what Twilight would become if she had none of the luck (or EoH).
