It’s a partial homage to the G1 episode “Only Human” and also a Christmas special!

Wait, WAT?! HUMAN OPTIMUS?! What kinda heresy is this?! When did this happen???

I do too, BP, but I’m a bit sad Hasbro didn’t choose to celebrate 30 years of MLP with a movie that remembered previous gens: Bring back old voice actors as guest stars! Reappearance of old characters! Various homages! Transformers: Animated was all about celebrating the past while spinning it in new ways, and in the process convinced me to go back and watch all of Beast Wars.
 
Instead, EG almost looks like Hasbro is trying to snatch a portion of the Monster High pie. Granted, from what I’ve heard about the quality of the writing in the MH animations, it shouldn’t be that hard to top the franchise. But still, the premise doesn’t exactly scream “My Little Pony Anniversary Celebration.”

Two series. Both with poorly received promotional images.
 
One went on to be a well loved series that was cancelled prematurely while the unusual designs became well loved (TF Animated fans loved them some chins).
 
I still have hope for Equestria Girls.
