I mean, I get that, but Cozy Glow did straight up kill someone and she was given way more chances at changing and refused to listen to reason. Should be have been turned to stone? Nah, not really. But seeing as she did work with Chrysalis and Tirek, Equestria two worst enemies of the time, doesn’t really help her favor. It is rather annoying that her backstory was never looked into and why she kinda falls flat as a villain. Though I love the Shirley Temple thing she has going.

Discord is…yeah, the later seasons were all over the place with him. That one episode seemed to be the only time he was very overprotective of Fluttershy just because she was hanging out with hippie pony. Discord had a lot back and forth between good and bad episodes. I think they should have kept him more like how he was with The Break-Up Break-Down.

Without getting TOO off topic, rumour has it they used the exact models from the 3ds titles with slight improvements. So they wouldn’t have to make new models every time a new Pokémon Gen came out. So yeah, the fact that importing most of these models can be done in hacking programs with relative ease means there really is no excuse NOT to have the full dex.

As for old man Discord, I fins the fact he literally outlived the Mane 6, when he set up Twilight to almost die as a result of the trio, turned a child to stone (look I get CG was evil, but surely she could have been redeemed), and acted like he was entitled to have Fluttershy, yeah not fond of Discord anymore sadly.

Pokémon had honestly no excuse for it considering how low-end their games’ graphics and output are, them not making all Pokémon in main line games was just pure laziness. Sword & Shield restricting Absol to end-game was inexcusable.

The old sage looking version of Discord, I kinda like the design. But I haven’t read any of the comics so I can’t say anything on his personality and whatnot, but still.

G5 is definitely growing on me. As someone who is neurodivergent, I’m not normally used to change in media I personally like.
With each Pokémon generation after 7 I dread how many of my favourites are getting removed in favour of a balanced set of mons. I do think while Scarlet and Violet do have their issues, they are a step in the right direction but being unable to import Pokémon from past gens especially relatively popular ones until the DLC came out was weird.
What does any of this have to do with G5? TYT and IDW are that DLC. I love the fact the comics and TYT bring back elements from G4 except Old Man Discord, but that’s for another day. Equestria games are back? Consider me hyped.

Yeah, not every kid is going to like the CG. But personally if Netflix didn’t time-crunch the animators and Hasbro didn’t cut so many corners against Berrow’s wishes, it could’ve been a lot better with the CG animation. I know it’s not for everyone but personally I’ve found MYM to be more expressive than TYT. But I think pretty much 2D animation has all but been phased out. Supposedly, 3D animation is just that much more popular. I can see it, but while I do prefer 2D, I just hope 3D animation just is given much more quality than it has been.

Bronies did not make G4 what it is. Its popularity between both adults and children did. Bronies did help get the show more attention, sure. But to say that without bronies, G4 would’ve been no different from G1 or G3 is pure ignorance. FiM was being made to revitalize the franchise and Faust was chosen and has stated that she wanted to give more quality content, writing, and story for little girls’ cartoons in FiM’s very CONCEPTION proves that your claim is nonsense. To say that it’s entire success was because of bronies is just pure G4 elitism at its finest. And to add onto that, FiM was originally intended to end after Season 3, but the sheer popularity of the show kept it going.

This is also why I dislike a lot of the brony community when it comes to G4, the entitled arrogance and refusal to actually look at facts (and the tons of messed up stuff they do) is just so aggravating. Just because bronies helped make the show more popularity doesn’t mean 100% of its success was from them. That is absolutely invalidating all the millions of children that loved the show and their parents that spend tons of money on the merchandise. Also, according to Hasbro TYT has gotten more traction than the initial viewing of ANY of the FiM seasons. So I guess that must be bronies too, right? Even though more than half of the adult fans have dropped the show because they don’t like it.

Oh, and Bronies made G4 what it is. It would have been another MLP by-the-numbers series that would have ended after a season or two and been forgotten. They were the ones buying the toys, DVDs, and merch and making the iconic songs reach millions of views on youtube, not little kids.

I actually wasn’t even going to comment on this because I genuinely don’t know how to feel about G5, there’s good moments to love and I feel like Spike should have been Anthropomorphic in the special as making him a quadraped felt like a bit of a downgrade. But at the same time I love how it’s rekindled my love of the series.
I COULD theoretically filter out G5 but then I’d be missing out on genuinely good Izzy and Zipp art which I’d rather not. In the end I choose not to complain and just enjoy what we got as rushes as it was.

All in all, just filter or ignore G5 if it really isn’t going the way you want and disappointing instead of finding excuses like that. It’s like me saying I have the right to keep talking crap about Discord because he’s so close to Fluttershy. “It’s calling out to me as a Fluttershy fan!” I know that doesn’t fly and just makes me seem obnoxious.

Eh, I think they made the right choice by making G5 a part of G4’s world - I think the reaction from certain sections of the fandom would still be the same (that of “ew, not G4”), except I think they would have avoided it entirely before making that judgment, and in doing this, they drove more toy/merch sales (which of course is the number 1 goal of any MLP thing).

I also like to think it had the effect of opening people’s eyes to the previous generations, to make them go “huh, this isn’t so bad” (except for Newborn Cuties, which as I’ve said before, is the one unforgivable piece of trash animation in MLP’s history)

FWIW, I think the balance between the old G4 lore and the new stuff for G5 was quite good, I was satisfied by it.

Also, as far as the CG goes, sorry, don’t agree there, as I honestly like the CG style even more than FiM’s. Also, the character models, with the exception of Izzy receiving a mane cut, are essentially the same as the movie, so I don’t understand that complaint. If you had said, say, the backgrounds, or some other effects, then yeah, I would certainly agree with you - it was odd, some of the signs that remained blank throughout MYM. But all things considered, I think it looked very good for operating on a much more constrained timeframe and budget as compared to ANG, and it definitely got better as it went along (particularly in the lighting and movement departments). FWIW, TYT’s style comes in just behind FiM’s on my list of favorites.

And also, I would say that Opaline felt genuinely threatening as a villain, unlike some cases in FiM coughS3Sombracough - plus, she felt chillingly believable as a narcissistic abuser (see her treatment of Misty)

I mean, were there things that I feel could be explored further (either in TYT or some sort of continuation of MYM)? Sure, of course there were coughSkyroscough , but there were numerous things throughout FiM that I thought could warrant further exploration, such as, perhaps, Diamond Tiara post-reformation. Doesn’t mean I wasn’t happy with what we got, and that’s the case with G5 as well.

Also, AFAIK, that statement by Gillian Berrow has not been independently confirmed. Sure, she allegedly said that, but I’ve not seen any video clip or a tweet by her confirming it, so I’m taking it with a grain of salt.

It was somewhat rushed, but also appropriate, IMO - and very magical feeling (that sequence with “Magic in Us” genuinely gave me goosebumps). I also thought the ultimate fate of Opaline was very fitting.

If anything, Secrets of Starlight was an odd note to leave MYM off on - were it not for that, it would easily be my favorite special, but as of now, I’d say it’s tied with Winter Wishday.

Considering they made it abundantly clear before C5 came out that MYM was ending that’s pretty much what they did. It was very rushed. Apparently the modeling team got transferred to other projects the moment they finished C6.

The rights issues is honestly why G4 connections, other races, lore changes and other stuff happened with MYM. It is very obnoxious tbh.

Exactly!! We don’t mind a different mlp, just a tad weird for it to take place in the same universe of g4, just be your own thing, totally cool, just don’t ride coattails of an already existing show, kinda reminds me of Prometheus, made by the same director but the studio wanted stuff from Alien in it, that’s what this feels like to me,that the connection to g5 and g4 just feels like a studio decision because g4 made a whole lot of money when it came out.

True, but if you ask me, G5 should have been its own thing and not a sequel to G4. I want to like G5, I really do, but some parts of it feel rushed and unfinished. Admittedly the MYM models also at times look almost like a downgrade in quality from the movie. I feel like if TYT was all of G5 or they made MYM like TYT animation wise it would be fine. You can say it’s a kids show all you want but kids at least deserve quality. Not every kid is going to be happy with CG models. It’s sad that 3D animation is killing 2D and that’s all I’m gonna say.

The Spike arc feels like they needed to wrap up Opaline really fast and rather than making her a genuinely good villain she feels like Magnifico from Wish where she’s just rushed in and defeated with little to no complexity. “It’s a kids show!” is such a tiring argument. They don’t need to appeal to bronies or anyone who liked G4, but why not just make G5 it’s own thing? Apparently the reason other races don’t appear in G5 is because of DHX and rights issues.

First off, the whole idea wasn’t to get G4 fans attention by saying “See, this is more of that thing you loved”, it was done because G4 was already successful, and making it a continuation of that instead of starting anew is just a good business decision. It would entice old and new viewers to see the new series. The writing and characters are not deliberately trying to get G4 fans’ attention. The only characters with any remote G4 connections is Sunny Starscout, and by extension her father, Argyle Starshine. The writing is hardly deliberately focused on G4 seeing as every G4 reference costs them to pay royalties, and G4-related stuff RARELY ever is present in the writing save for the rare nods to G4 and the very rare 2 cameos. It’s also a no-brainer that adults were never the target audience, to the surprise of no one. Also, yes it is set in the same world, but really? “set in the same place”?? Ah yes, because you totally see Ponyville, Canterlot, Cloudsdale, or even any location from G4, right? Even the maps of G5’s world is completely different and clearly nowhere near any feasible location in G4. Showcasing the same characters from G4? I’m sorry, HUH?? Ah yes, because we have a brief cameo of Twilight and having Spike return for Chapter 6. That’s it. No one else shows up. Now if you’re implying that the main cast is a carbon copy of the G4 Mane Six, I don’t even know where to begin with how wrong that is.

Furthermore, G5 is not G4. It may have the same canon world, cameo a couple characters, and reference it now and again, but it is still completely different locations, recurring characters, story structure, music style, personalities, etc. G5 is vastly different from G4 for a reason, because it’s G5. G4’s story was just being used as a stepping stone for G5 to kick off from, nothing more nothing less. Outside of the references and cameos, which are not all that frequent, it is still it’s own thing. To think G5 is G4 is the false mentality so many purists have for justifying them not judging G5 as a series on its on, but by how faithful it is to G4.

You can complain about Spike’s design or voice all you want. I’ve watched all of G4 and seen Chapter 6 and Spike’s personality is spot-on. If someone’s appearance is the only thing that matters to a character to you, then that’s a rather vain mentality to have. At the end of the day, it’s a 3D show that’s been cutting corners and having executive meddling. It’s no surprise Spike has a similar design to the other dragons. Not to mention Chapter 6 was obviously rushed because they wanted to get the conclusion over with, I don’t think Hasbro wanted to have them go all out for a design for a returning G4 character when they know most of the G4 fans don’t even care about G5 to begin with.

I’d like to also point out that a lot of those so-called “G4 fans” are trying to get Hasbro to REDO Chapter 6 just because it has references to Spike being Twilight’s advisor at the end of G4, to make parts of G4 not canon. They complain that G5 is not like G4 and that it isn’t consistent with G4 (Even though G4 was never consistent with its own lore half the time), but now they want it to be less consistent with G4? I really don’t think most of these G4 purists have a respectable opinion if they flip-flop on their own opinions for the sole purpose of criticizing G5. Not once have I seen these purists actually praise Spike’s personality in Chapter 6 because they’re so butthurt about his rushed design or his super deep voice from an super obscure VA that they probably never watched Chapter 6.

I don’t even think they would treat it much differently if they made G5 a completely separate canon/world. They would probably still complain about it not being like G4.

G5’s lore is intrinsically tied to G4. This was made as blatant as the original press release of what direction G5 was going to go in. It wasn’t going to be a new cast, it wasn’t going to be a clean slate with some amusing references, it’s a literal continuation set into the future of G4.

By doing this, G5’s writing and characters are deliberately TRYING to get the G4 fans attention by saying “See, this is more of that thing you loved.” However, it also means that everything in G5 is subject to judgement for continuity due to G5 not JUST being set in the same world, but being set in the same place, and showcasing the same characters from G4.

This is why the alleged “G4 purists” don’t block G5 submissions, because G5 IS G4.

So… you mean the not-full-sized-dragon form from G4 and that this is the same Spike from G4?

G4 purists need to hide the G5 tag and the character tags just to be sure. We like G5 and we’re tired of G4 purists forcing themselves to watch G5 just so they can whine about Hasbro not blowing their budget on G4 references and dragons.

I personally think Spike’s G5 design fits his character, he’s a chill guy so he looks like the other dragons eventhough he’s the dragon lord. This new design fits him much better than that gigachad anthro design he had in the series finale. Now they will moan that Tell Your Tale appears to be taking over, despite the fact that Tell Your Tale has the opportunity to free up the budget for your precious unique dragon molds and G4 references.
