Looks as if Opaline’s doing the look because of her humiliation of being beaten by ‘commoners’. Shame be a fitting punishment for her after how she abuse her talents for personal gain.

Personally, I think one of the biggest mistakes was having it be where Opaline was responsible for the pony races having conflict and Equestria eventually breaking up.
Frankly, I think it would’ve been far more interesting for her as a character (and as a story for G5 overall) if instead the breakup of old Equestria was something that was happening on its own, and that Opaline - being an ancient Alicorn who had seen things like this happen before - was someone who genuinely believed that the pony races required the powerful magic and the strong-hoofed rule of an Alicorn such as herself in order to keep them together.

From my point of view, I think it is probably better to add more dimension to Opaline’s character. Like, instead of making her view Misty as a tool, maybe writers can make her genuinely care about Misty— perhaps she will take care of Misty when she is sick or give her a wing hug when she fails the mission(occasionally). The care Opaline gives to Misty will make her struggle and get torn up between her urge to save Equestria and wanting to save her adopted Mother before she goes too far. A story like this may be more interesting than what we have now.
I wonder if anyone has similar thoughts to mine.

Is it? I do not know much about Chrysalis. I just think a more motherly Opaline maybe more interesting. It adds to dynamic.

My Unpopular Opinion:
I think it is a mistake to write Opaline as a stereotypical stepmom villain from the beginning to the end.
From my point of view, I think it is probably better to add more dimension to Opaline’s character. Like, instead of making her view Misty as a tool, maybe writers can make her genuinely care about Misty— perhaps she will take care of Misty when she is sick or give her a wing hug when she fails the mission(occasionally). The care Opaline gives to Misty will make her struggle and get torn up between her urge to save Equestria and wanting to save her adopted Mother before she goes too far. A story like this may be more interesting than what we have now.
I also think TYT is doing better in the Characterization of Opaline. I definitely prefer Villian doing actually interesting things instead of ‘MHAHAHHAAH DRAGON FIRE MAHAHAHAH TAKING OVER EQUESTRIA AHAHAHA’ all the time.
When I watch TYT, I see a villain that makes me care. I love her laugh, I love her stupid bathrobe, and I also love how she and Misty keep failing their plans. She is the best part of TYT for me and I almost expect the writers to explore her character more—but she is still a Klown to the end of her. Well, that’s not bad, but I still wanna see more…I wonder if she will appear again.
I wonder if anyone has similar thoughts to mine.

She pretty clearly can’t enter into Equestria because of the protective barrier that Twilight Sparkle had erected. This is said multiple times throughout the show, which makes me wonder how you might have missed that.
Heck, she couldn’t even see into Equestria until after the events of Chapter 1.
