The End wasn't The End - Found a new home after the great exodus of 2012

@TexasUberAlles
I did not think Rainbow Dash was really OOC in MMDW, and I think she deserved to be put in her place. My problem was with the smug, self-congratulatory attitudes of her friends, because they ended up seeming not much better than her. The hypocrisy was the way they would compliment themselves for their parts in the Mare-Do-well charade, which made their intentions not seem much more noble than Dash’s. They could have easily avoided that by making them compliment each other. If the goal was to teach Rainbow Dash modesty, it was kind of lost.

I don’t even dislike that episode, though– flawed as it may be, it was still highly entertaining and we got a chance to explore some of Dash’s insecurities, and the characters’ insecurities are at the heart of many of the show’s best episodes. It may not have been perfect, but there was nothing about it that so off-kilter that I couldn’t enjoy the episode. That’s just me though– I know there are other things about the episode that people criticize (like the logic behind a masked superhero in a town with virtually no crime), but I still liked it.

There’s one minor flaw as well that still exists in the two parter MMC. I think if it were two parts, I would like the beginning entirely devoted to fixing Star Swirl’s spell. And then rather than have the ceremony at the end (which is literally 99% possible since that’s how they ended the shafted version) I think it would be better to have the coronation at the beginning of the next episode. Then we have a normal everyday episode for the last 15 minutes.

The way it sits they throw a lot of importance on being a princess, I think it’d be a nice change-up if it’s shown they only ever treat Celestia that way, because she’s always been there. Twilight and Luna go about their usual daily business as ‘just royals.’ Luna is too new to have the same ‘cult’ sister or not, and Twily is too ‘familiar’ to the Ponyvillians to get any ‘bow and serve’ (and then she goes and corrects the few that do) The whole european princess motif where everyone bows and prostrates and falls over each other to please them just doesn’t seem like it would fit the MLP universe very much. Especially not for “working princesses.” Cadence seems like she gets the same treatment in the Crystal Empire as Fancypants would despite ruling.

Haha, no, people don’t like MMC either because it crammed too much in and should have been a two-parter (the good reason) or because it brutally violated their headcanon and they think the show owes them the story they want (the bad reason). I mean that princessification is something that should have had a full season’s worth of storyline-advancing episodes and background mentions to build it up, rather than a couple of episodes and a few mentions in a half-season. 26 episodes would have allowed for MMC to be a two-parter like Larson intended before EqG came along and boofoo’d Season 3.

And no, I don’t think the length of an entire movie is going to change the fact that it’s full of ass-ugly humans with ghastly character designs and a complete lack of any “human” skintone darker than The Simpsons; McCarthy is amazing and the cast’s talent speaks for itself, but writing and acting can’t fix this. The thoroughly un-DHX-like animation quality, Dog!Spike, Chicken!Scootaloo, high school setting, bitchy senior, unnecessary love interest, and the Other 5 being reduced to bookends for Twilight’s Big Adventure are just icing on the turds already in the punchbowl. I expect there to be plenty of funny as hell moments like Twilight trying to eat lunch with her face, but the reasons I hate this thing are fundamental and inherent to its basic premise.

@bboifatz
There was nothing OOC or “hypocritical” about the way everypony else treated poor, poor Rainbow Dash in MMDW; RD fanboys hate that episode because it unflinchingly and unavoidably shows exactly how much of an asshole Rainbow Dash was until she learned how to read, and they hate having it acknowledged so openly that their favorite pony was an insufferable jerkass.

@Zennistrad
Making Spike into an idiot for the entire episode kind of does, though. Even Rarity was an ooc bitch, which is ironic since they rewrote her role as Applejack because they were afraid that the original script made her too bitchy.

I liked Spike At Your Service. What people seemed to miss about that episode was that Spike was extremely competent at everything that wasn’t cooking, he was able to perform ridiculous tasks such as cutting a field of grass with a pair of tweezers.

That, and they all got crammed together at the very end, after one utterly exceptional episode. It’s really quite glaring, the sudden quality dip. My own personal guess is that marks the point when heavy work began on Equestria Girls because I can’t really think up any other reason that doesn’t involve the staff itself getting worse. While I think Games is about as weak as MMDW, it’s not as overt about it (it’s just as kooky and random but no one went wickedly OOC), but it’s not really as good on subsequent watches because all of a sudden everyone got slapped down to F-Troop level intelligence. It was overall more enjoyable than MMDW to me but it feels like they built the interlocking moments with Sidekicks first and THEN did the rest of it.

@Niggoslav_Krawczyk
We got half the number of episodes total, but the same amount of “meh” or worse episodes– although even the worst episodes of Seasons 1 or 2 were only about as bad as a “meh” episode from Season 3. Season 3’s worst episodes were really in a league of their own as far as suckiness is concerned.

People didn’t like Mysterious Mare Do Well because Rainbow Dash was bratty and her friends were all smug and hypocritical. It was a weak episode, but I never hated it– in fact, I actually enjoyed it for the visuals and humor (I know, that’s a bit hypocritcal considering how much I hate MMC). The difference though is that MMDW was only one mediocre episode, and its flaws were easy to ignore as soon as the next episode started.

Season 3 seemed to almost dogpile on the mediocre and bad episodes, and the end result was a short season that is remembered for its failures at least as much as its successes. I had never seen an episode of MLP as bad as Spike at Your Service, and then I saw MMC which was so bad that I literally felt physically sick after watching it (and I am not even exaggerating– I had a knot in my chest for hours).

I would gladly watch Mysterious Mare Do Well 10 times before I’d watch MMC again.

And Spike got shat on harder than ever before. The highs might’ve been higher, but the lows were the lowest they’ve ever been since that damned owl showed up. A half dud record hurts much more the less episodes you have.

@TheLoneLampman
MMC was a bad episode because not just because it was rushed, but because it was illogical. Maybe some of its problems could have been solved if they had stretched it out to an hour, but I don’t think that it would have changed how broken the mechanics and logic of the episode were. Ultimately it was about Twilight Sparkle finishing a poem and then going to an ethereal plane where Celestia turns out to have been lurking on her for her entire life, and then turns her into an Alicorn without even giving her a choice.

It was a dumb, poorly written episode, and I can’t help but suspect Equestria Girls will end up suffering the same fate except it will be an hour long instead of 20 minutes.

You’re saying that people didn’t like MMC because of lack of time for a proper setup. Yeah, 22 minutes is a bit short to work it into.

So, with EQG, is it impossible to believe that having the length of an ENTIRE MOVIE to work with, they just might be able to make it good…?

All of the specific things I hate about this movie are right there in the trailer; watching the movie itself isn’t going to make those things go away, it’s just going to be 72 times worse.

I fully expect the finished product to not be anywhere near the horrific aponecalypse that it’s being made out to be; McCarthy is an aces writer and she’s spun trite setups like fashion shows and royal weddings into gold before, but they’re still going to be humans in a high school full of White-people-with-occasional-candy-colored-people and unidimensional stock characters. The punchbowl is still contaminated, and fishing around for a clean ladlefull isn’t going to work for 72 minutes any more than it worked for one minute.

@Everyone crybabying about Season 3
Y’all are seriously straight trippin’, the only things wrong with S3 were that it got cut in half by EqG and Princess Sparklehorse didn’t get enough setup as a result, and the lack of a Rarity episode. Rainbow Dash finally got to be a likeable character, for cryin’ out loud! Trixie came back! Onscreen RariJack! S3 rocked.

All we know is a one-paragraph summary and a two-minute trailer.

We have absolutely no clue what the actual details of it are beyond “twilight ends up in human world to find crown, people who look like her friends, high school.”

I didn’t say it was good. I said it was a mediocre pass. MMC would have gotten a 64% if it was being graded for a creative writing class. That’s not a good standard to upload oneself too. “Well! It had a jaunty song, and things we expected to be cute doing cute things! What a wonderful episode!” …Don’t think so

It’s called conjecture and jumping to conclusions. A minute long trailer and a few sentences in a synopsis are not evidence.

I’d love to point out it was good but it still have noticeable and big flaws, but everyone knows this, it’d be be redundant that this point to mention them. More to the point, like you said it wasn’t a bad episode, not ‘great’ like some others but still pretty good, and it’s being presented like a bad episode and should looked at with caution, to an extent it should be, but as it is now it’s mostly just conjecture.

That’s cool and all, but excusing terrible pacing is inexcusable, no matter whether you liked a work or not. That’s the reason rating systems have MORE THAN JUST TWO GRADES you know. So while MMC is still a pass, it’s only a mediocre pass, not full bore ‘fuckiwishtheshowwasthisallthetime’ (90%+) like Magic Duel, Sleepless, Sweet&Elite, or A Friend Indeed.

Magical Mystery Cure was the way it was because it was the last episode in a season of only 13 episodes. Had they had more episodes to work with, they probably would have done a low more.

Equestria Girls is an entire movie and they thus have a lot more to work with. And given that EQG is being written by Meghan McCarthy, it wouldn’t be too much of a stretch to imagine that she’d pull of a similar surprise like in A Canterlot Wedding.
