Located near a shallow spring in the vast Horsetralian Outback, the Orchid Hive is a hidden gem amongst all other changeling hives in the world.

Their appearance is very unique: While still maintaining most of the key features of a changeling, such as gossamer wings, sharp fangs, and a sturdy exoskeleton, they lack a carapace on their back and their bodies are more rounder in shape, with their abdomen consisting of three dark-pink bands. They also sport manes and tails of soft fuzz like that of a moth or bumblebee and their eyes actually have pupils (a feature that is typically limited to queens in other changeling hives).

Another unique quirk about the Orchid Hive is how they collect love, for instead of stealing it directly from others, they harvest it passively though bartering and sharing. When the hive was first established, there were no settlements. But then, a small farming town called Riverwolf was established and a few soldiers were sent in to see how much love it generated. They discovered that the population made others happy by producing homemade goods and giving them away either for free or for money. One disguised soldier managed to acquire a small bag of sugar from one of the markets, and decided to mix it with some of their slime as an experiment.

The end result was a mixture that tasted like a rich, sweet homemade honey.

Surprised by how delicious this new concoction was, the rest of the hive knew how they could get love from Riverwolf’s citizens: They would store their “honey” in jars, head into town disguised as beekeepers, and sell it to others. The plan was a success, with everyone enjoying its sweet tangy flavor. Since then, these changelings have been providing the town with their “Orchid Honey” every year and blissfully enjoyed the love that their customers give them in return.

Their slime is a hot pink color, and is made from flower nectar and various fruits grown from the farms of Riverwolf. It has a very sweet aroma.

Following the aftermath of the Chrysalis Hive’s failed invasion of Canterlot during the Royal Wedding, the Orchid Hive revealed their true selves to the citizens of Riverwolf, but assured them that they were nothing like the changelings they heard about on the news and that as long as they still enjoyed the honey they provided them, there would be no conflict from either side. Miraculously, the whole town believed them, and as such they became the first changeling hive to be accepted by civilization as an ally.

Their queen, Carbonaria, further exemplifies their non-hostile nature, as she is kind, motherly, and treats her subjects like her children (even the males, who are not technically her direct offspring).
