To say that Demo Reel was a complete and utter wash would undersell the depth of its failure. The show was a hodgepodge of the Nostalgia Critic’s later failed comedy, Doug Walker’s bitterness over his inability to stand under the glare, and his delusions that a character like Donny Dupre could carry his Oscar Bait nonsense. It sucked. It continued to suck even after - or perhaps because of- the series decided that it wanted to be a Tumblr-lite melodrama. When an April Fools video by the Cinema Snob has a better grasp of a concept that Doug almost jettisoned his career for, that is a bad sign. Demo Reel lasted far longer than it deserved, and the metaphysical annihilation of Donnie Dupre and all his self-indulgent navel-gazing was honestly too good for it.

Compare this to Sunset Shimmer. She spent one movie as a lame, one-dimensional villain with no clear motives that was actually intimidating. And you know what? The writers learned from that failure! They gave her a character arc! She had to suffer the consequences of her actions! They made her tragic and interesting and oh so adorable. And like Gkar before her, she grew from a pathetic villain to an endearing, badass, and charismatic hero that both the school and the fans rooted for. When the popular girl bully antagonist of a spinoff cartoon is more engaging than the “tragic” focal character of the successor of the Nostalgia Critic, you know someone has failed miserably.

Long story short: Sunset Shimmer rules, Demo Reel drools, and swedeing is a terrible film practice that distracted Jack Black from becoming the rock god he was born to be.

Because Demo Reel was so damn focused on wacky hijinx and Oscar Baiting (ironically, for a series that was in no position to receive an Oscar even if it was good) that it forgot to give Tom a real reason for hating Demo Reel besides “GRRRR I’M A FAKE SWEDISH GUY WHO’S CRAZY FOR NO ADEQUATELY EXPLORED REASON AND THINKS DONNIE DUPRE IS HONING IN ON HIS TURF DESPITE HAVING ABSOLUTELY NO REASON TO BELIEVE SO!” And then Demo Reel shat its own pants in the ratings because the writers couldn’t figure out what they wanted to do in time, so we never learn ANYTHING about all of this.

Doug Walker’s dream project, everyone! :D

Because OP has watched a 55-second compilation of clips from an hour-plus movie, so of course s/he knows everything about it.

Duh.
