Background Pony #0792
It’s not just about the lie and the fact that Pipp gets to be the favourite. It’s that even though Zipp is the smart, driven one, and Pipp is a bit naive, Pipp gets to be the favourite because she helps keeps the Bread and Circuses going in Zephyr Heights.
But Zipp does not care at all about that sort of attention, not even after magic returned. Like Sunny, she knew there was another way to live, and was frustrated that instead of trying to make things better, Haven always chose to keep the status quo. Worse, she would dismiss Zipp entirely. Pipp, on the other hand, did everything that was asked of her.
It’s clear that Zipp and her family love each other very much, but Haven had a set of ideals different from Zipp’s, and Pipp just so happened to benefit from her mother’s (and the city’s) beliefs. If anything, its these ideals based on lies that she rebelled against, and in turn against her mother and ZH.
You can tell that she doesn’t hold it against her sister even in the movie. She thought of her more as a product of her upbringing, and wanted her to see the light, so to speak. Which she did.

@Blackblade360
If you search for the string vector, cutie mark, no pony, the ones for The Mane Six should be on the second-to-last page. Refine your search as needed.
I haven’t allowed it. I prefer to just save my projects to my hard drive. If you export a diagram (as, say, a PNG or PDF) and tick the “Include a copy of my diagram” box, you can resume working on it just by loading that file.

@DerpyFast
I see how that’s the better fit, but it still means Pipp and Zipp should have both Celestia and Luna’s traits apiece.
Consider:
  • Luna rebelled because she wanted power/recognition, Zipp because she didn’t want that.
  • Zipp never considered just telling the truth/declining the crown, still putting her people over her wants (to rebel) is the opposite of rebelling, and opposite of Luna’s whim-driven character/style, closer to Celestia ruling despite oft being shown bored/tired of the responsibilities style.
    ** Realized Luna’s whim-drivenness and desire for approval is closer to Pipp’s desire for attention and what we’ve seen of her ruling style/process.

@PawelS
It’s the fact that he goes from trying to suppress the magic in order to protect others, to using the magic to protect others. It’s part of his character growth, so I figured it was important enough to include.
@Storm_Shy
That would have been a good thing to include.
@Rodboycko
Starlight is a can of worms that was beyond the scope of this project. Plus, I haven’t watched the back half of the show in awhile. I felt like the parallels to Fluttershy and Coco were the best way to summarize Misty’s arc.
As a side note, you can draw a parallel between Starlight and Alphabittle, since they’re both characters who had to go through losing someone they care about, and then confronting the fact that that person has changed. Alphabittle really puts into perspective just how weak Starlight’s backstory was.
@Background Pony #0792
This chart is just meant to be a very forensic breakdown of the parallels one can draw.
Misty herself is not a complex character. It’s the circumstances of her life that are complex.
So here’s how I interpreted things: Zipp says that she’s tired of living a lie, but I think there’s more to it than that.
In Ancient Rome, there was this idea called “Bread and Circuses”. Here’s Google’s explanation:
In a political context, the phrase means to generate public approval, not by excellence in public service or public policy, but by diversion, distraction, or by satisfying the most immediate or base requirements of a populace, by offering a palliative: for example food (bread) or entertainment (circuses).
Sound familiar? Now look at this scene:

To me, the poster doesn’t just represent flying. It represents striving for excellence. It’s not just that Zipp would be forced to rule. It’s that she would be forced to rule over citizens who are too distracted to even care that they can’t fly. It’s not just about the lie and the fact that Pipp gets to be the favourite. It’s that even though Zipp is the smart, driven one, and Pipp is a bit naive, Pipp gets to be the favourite because she helps keeps the Bread and Circuses going in Zephyr Heights.
When you get right down to it, Pipp is the face of Zipp’s frustration. I’m drawing a specific parallel between the story of Nightmare Moon, and the story of Zipp rebelling.
Background Pony #0792
I don’t think Zipp is recentful of Pipp at all. If anything, it’s at the fact that she was born into royalty and being known for that and not her own accomplishments.

@Rodboycko
What about Sunset Shimmer as well? And how did Starlight not become less cynical by accepting friendship? And how’s Misty more complex (despite having the fewest characters she contrasts as shown) as opposed to Starlight (who’s complexity is poorly handled as opposed to lacking it)?
Also Pipp and Zipp’s comparison to Luna and Celestia miss details. Zipp rebelled for the opposite reasons as Luna, not caring for power/attention which Luna wanted. Pipp’s adored but not such they want her for the throne instead (the socio-political dynamics and how if effect the royal families relationships is grossly unexplored). You could also argue Zipp’s Celestia for being the main ruler despite not caring for the formalities and Pipp Luna for being the secondary one.
Relating: some the G4 traits were dropped/inconsistent further complicating this. “Curious, with a desire to experiment” stopped applying after Twilight by S5 at least, “Scientific and values knowledge” lost the Scientific part after becoming Princess if not after S2. Also Celestia and Luna swapped who’s the stern and serious/fun and sociable one after S2.
Storm_Shy

On Misty I’d also add Tempest: pony who worked for a villian under the -fake- promise that she would be given something she craved the most

Now this is a very interesting comparison chart. This really shows that while each of the G5 Main 6 ponies do in fact closely identify with a particular pony of the G4 Main 6, they also share traits with some of the other G4 ponies as well and are therefore hardly a carbon copy of said particular Main 6 pony.
