So bat ponies don’t have a taboo about that?
Off to the clinic while we chat.
As you walk to the clinic, you decide to spare Honourshine the bat pony’s loaded question, and interject with one of your own: You ask Moonflower if paired relatives are common among her people.
Moonflower: “Hmmm… I never really thought about it, but I guess so! Maybe havin’ foals together is more rare ‘cause I haven’t seen a lot of those, but casual fun stuff happens all the time.”
Honourshine: “I suppose that makes sense. Bat ponies must have already been living in isolation when those kinds of relationships became unpopular. And with the tale losing relevance over time, it’s unlikely to become much of a factor in the future, either.”
Moonflower: “Ya don’t think the story holds up?”
Honourshine: “Technology was different at the time. Nowadays, it’s common courtesy to use infertility magic spells or potions when bonding with others, even if they’re not strictly necessary. But those had yet to be discovered back then, so the risk of falling in love carried more weight.”
Moonflower: “Ooh, that’s true! Even we do that now. How ‘bout’cha, Blazer? Do you think it’s weird?”
You shrug, and tell Moonflower that you’ve certainly heard of much stranger things happening behind closed doors.
Moonflower: “Heehee… or out in the field!”
You grin, and nod at that; only since you’ve learned to fly have you become aware of how open the sky really is… and how nowhere under it is as private as one might think. And while you’ve flown over quite a few romantic scenes in the past moon alone, you’ve always politely looked the other way, as you are sure many have done for you before.
Honourshine: “Hm… good to know.”
After one last turn, you arrive at the clinic. Past a set of gold-framed glass doors, you enter a spacious lobby where a receptionist greets you with an inquisitive look. You walk up to the desk, and ask if it would be possible for you and your friend to see a sanguimancer.
The receptionist consults a few schedules, notes down your information, then gestures to the mostly empty waiting room nearby.
Receptionist: “Doctor Crux Claret will see you in a few minutes. Please have a seat in the waiting room…”
Crux Claret: “… Honourshine and Trailblazer?”
You and your companions get up from your seats, and follow the stallion to his office. After inviting you to sit down once more, the doctor uses his unicorn magic to pull out a couple of empty folders from a drawer, and write down your names, before looking over to you.
Crux Claret: “So, what can I do for you today?”
You take a moment to explain your situation to the sanguimancer, along with what you’ve learned this morning, then ask if it would be possible to determine how closely related you and Honourshine may be.
Crux Claret: “I’ll be transparent with you: I can’t promise anything. What you’re describing is a rather unique predicament, and you may not get the results you want. But we can try.”
You nod, and the doctor gestures for you to come sit on the examination table. Then, after some preparations, you feel a spell tingle through the side of your neck. Honourshine averts her eyes before any needles come into view.
Crux Claret: “Good. Now, Honourshine?”
You hop off the table, and your foalhood friend slowly, reluctantly takes your place. Knowing her well, you decide to stay by her side and hold her hoof. Thankfully, the procedure is quickly over with, and you soon return to your seats.
Crux Claret: “Very well. I will analyse these samples in my laboratory, and bring you the results shortly…”
The sanguimancer returns to his office a few minutes later with his analysis, and your chatter is interrupted with anticipation.
Crux Claret: “Thank you for waiting. Now then, Honourshine and Trailblazer. After studying your biomagical structure, I can confirm that the two of you are from the same Earth Pony clan. Your clan, however, is a mystery; you are very distantly related to a few of the greater clans around Equestria, but there are no records matching anything close to the one you’re from. I suspect the magic you mentioned earlier is to blame.
As for how closely related you are, I’m afraid the results are somewhat inconclusive. Your magic signatures are highly irregular, yet contain strongly matching patterns — either in spite of, or because of, your magical mishap. Taking this into consideration, I estimate the chances of you being siblings at approximately fifty percent.”
You exchange glances with Honourshine. As expected, she looks beyond unamused. Still, you thank Crux Claret for the information.
Crux Claret: “It’s an unfortunate situation, but if it’s any consolation, you both appear to be quite healthy. Now, was there anything else I could do for you?”
