The End wasn't The End - Found a new home after the great exodus of 2012

@Sjogre
It’s a bit iffy. The explosion at least imo seems to be one bigass explosion caused by the destruction of Eggman’s giant mecha, with wall of fire right at Sonic’s heels.

Of course right afterwards he survives falling from space without suffocating or burning up. Like I said, I don’t claim to fully understand the physics of outrunning an explosion. I based Sonic’s speed a few articles I read via Google.

Part of the problem with figuring out how fast a speedster can move is that the writers rarely do the work themselves. This results in stuff like the Flash moving at several million or billion times the speed of light while evacuating a city despite his powers only getting him up to light speed before he fades into the Speed Force. Serious fight boards tend to deal with the inconsistencies by ignoring the absurdly high and low end showings, using a baseline that matches a character’s general portrayal.

For Dash, outside of the Sonic Rainboom state she only seems to be flying at a couple of hundred miles per hour. Video game Sonic generally lives up to his name. Archie Sonic managed to pull a pretty good version of an Infinite Mass Punch, outclassing both by a wide margin.

Oh right, I forgot he about his flash step and can pretty much defy all laws of gravity, being able to spin dash multiple times at will. Even then, he doesn’t seem all that overpowered when compared to all the other versions of Sonic.

Is that so? I admit I haven’t read much DC, much less Flash comics(I’m more of a fan of the DCAU where the powers are toned down), so I wouldn’t know personally. It’s just that in many “DC character vs. some non-DC guy”, if the DC character is Supes, Flash, Wonder Woman, or Captain Marvel, you get the impression from their fans that these characters can casually go FTL whenever they want with no effort.

Oh, I know that Sonic has better acceleration to top speed. It’s just that some of the methods used to determine speed are dodgy. The method used to get Dash’s mach ten number was one of the worst.

For Sonic’s mach twenty-four, do you know it that was supposed to be one large explosion, or a series of smaller ones? Because the second situation requires a much lower speed, and would fit with how most things are consumed by a bunch of small explosions instead of just one big one.

Really? I just watched the OVA again to be sure and all I noticed is that he can survive a very long fall and that can rip through large metal objects very easily. I mean, it’s nothing to really gloss over, but definitely not what I’d call OP.

Actually, the Flash can only break the Light Barrier by a little amount.
Well, no, to be honest once (during the Crisis) Barry outran a Tachyon (a particle that moves faster than time itself) - but he disintegrated to do that. I guess he’d rather NOT repeat that exploit…

One factor to be taken into consideration is that Sonic naturally taps into the same energies as Chaos Emeralds to fuel his ridiculous speed. The BOOST power he acquired in recent games is a recent expression of his sheer speed ability, allowing him to cut the air profile even better than normal.

Admittedly Rainbow Dash herself uses pegasus magic to acheive her speeds, so in theory if she mastered it she could match him in a flat race.

Sonic’s true advantage is his parkour instinct, honed by speedrunning and finding the quickest or most trouble-free paths through the zones. He would hardly lose any speed performing nigh-instant calculations to change his entry and literally bounce around obstacles at a rate even Dashie can’t compare.

However, he isn’t as cute as her.

Pfft, the Flash is most overpowered speedster in fiction. Can’t he go thousands of times faster than light?
Acutally, I do recall a fiction series call Hyperion that had a cybernetic character named the Shrike. He could literally go trillions of times faster than light, AND he has time manipulation powers on top of that.

Even if the speed estimations of the two are off, there’s an important difference between the two. To reach her max speed and do a Sonic Rainboom, Dash needs at least a few hundred meters or more to speed up along to do so. Sonic, meanwhile, has consistently been shown in almost all adaptions(including recent games) to reach his supersonic speeds almost instantly with no time spent running and speeding up, with the press of a button.

Honestly, I’ve seen Sonic compared to slower speedsters WAY so many times… Okay, we got it, he can outrun Dash. Well, so can Road Runner…
I’d like, for once, to see the Blue Asshole (sorry, but you gotta admit that he’s got an ego the size of New Jersey) pitted against someone who can leave him behind without even trying, someone like Barry Allen. The face on mr. “You’re too slow!” when The Flash leaves him in the dust would be worth it.
(Just to be clear: I don’t like Dash’s original attitude either. I rejoiced every time someone in the show fed her some humble pie - and yes, I’m including Mare Do Well in the number. But compared to Sonic Dash is a paragon of humility…)

From what I recall, OVA Sonic was basically at Dragonball levels of power minus the flying and ki blasts(ridiculous super strength and toughness, able to leap hundreds of feet in the air, and he was even faster, being able to teleport/flash step hundred of meters in an instant at will). What he lacks in stuff like Chaos Control and the Light Speed Dash, OVA Sonic makes up for in this beefed up physical abilities. Seriously, some people I’ve talked to in forums compared OVA Sonic to the Incredible freaking Hulk. He’s that physically overpowered.

From what little I know of Sonic X, Sonic is just as broken there as in the games, but now he can fucking fly around by grabbing a ring.

Sonic has a lot more combat experience and has won against some impressive enemies. His usual attack is to buzzsaw through metal robots while moving at super speed. Rainbow can’t handle an impact with a pile of rocks.

At best, she can play keep away, but her weather attacks aren’t going to phase him, and if she goes for something close up, Sonic will tear her apart.

The mach ten figure for Rainbow never did make a lot of sense. It relied on using a visual that didn’t act like a mach cone as a mach cone. I don’t know if the mach 24 figure for Sonic is an equally absurd highball or not, but he’s been able to consistently hit the speed of sound, minimum, since he was around ten years old. His average speed is higher than Dash’s, and he has reflexes to match, while Dash’s super speed is from her flight, with only good speed and reflexes outside it.

incoming tl;dr geekery

So on /mlp/ tonight we had a Death Battle thread between these two. The general consensus was that Sonic, even without any power ups or Chaos Emeralds would win due to superior overall feats in durability(lol surviving re-entry), strength(the guy regularly trashes gigantic mecha and he plows through cars like they were toys), abilities(including the broken as hell Insta-Shield), combat experience(Sonic has defeated TWO Chaos Emerald empowered demigods, Perfect Chaos and Ultimate Emerl, in his base form, not to mention enemies like Knuckles, Metal Sonic, and Shadow), and even speed(Light Speed Attack lol). Poor Dashie’s only real advantage was flight, really.

And that’s just game Sonic. Archie Sonic, Fleetway Sonic, and OVA Sonic are even more overpowered.

Disregarding the light speed stuff and a moment in the Fleetway comic in which Sonic ran across half the circumference of the Earth in less than 5 seconds(waaaay beyond Dash’s estimated Mach 10), I figured that game Sonic can still outspeed Dash. In the finale of Sonic 2, he easily outran a massive explosion that crippled the Death Egg. I looked up “outrun an explosion”, and found that for most “outrun an explosion” scenes, C4 is used, which expands at a rate of 8047 meters per second. At least from what I understand, this means that Sonic can at least go up to Mach 24, more than twice the speed of Rainbow Dash!
