Let’s see, to whom should I listen, someone who writes out a comment filled with detail, or someone who writes a couple of snarky lines? Decisions, decisions…

sigh. 250 odd pages of badly done Decompression.

Side from a couple of sketches this book was totally worthless. I feel for anyone who actually paid the asking price for this thing.

The End wasn't The End - Found a new home after the great exodus of 2012

@Bongo
Thankyou for that little review. I’ve ordered my copy now.

“The first 8 pages are literally the pictures and words from the book twilight was reading from the first episode of the first season (Once upon a time in the magical land of Equestria…)”
This sounds awesome. I can imadgine opening the book and reading it out. :D

Depends on what you want in the book. If you want a ton of sketches and a deeper look into the characters and land…well…it’s there but not really.

I’ll try to explain.

The first half (p.12-82) of the book is mostly filled with a brief overview of everything, mostly major character bios and place descriptions. They don’t reveal too much however, mostly going over what we already know of the place from the show. Like for example, in the Ponyville description, the only thing that is revealed is that the library is named ‘Golden Oaks Library’. other than that, we already know that Sweet Apple Acres founded ponyville, and that it has Sugarcube Corner and a market and such. Doesn’t reveal much more than that. Same goes for the character bios. Like the Changelings/Queen Chrysalis for example under the villains’ chapter. Chrysalis is only given two long lines telling us she is the leader of the changelings, is evil, and tried to take over Canterlot without explaining where she came from or even her motivations, which were stated in the episode (To find love to feast on). The only place where it really seems to dwell a bit deeper than what we already know is the Interview Chapter with Lauren Faust on p.76. Most of it talks about what her favorite pony to work on is or what goes into creating a song, etc. An interesting thing was revealed, however. Lauren states in the interview that she see’s the Elements of Harmony having a finite number of uses. Other than that, everything you need to know is covered in the show.

The second half (p.83-255) takes up the vast majority of space in the book and is basically just 3 chapters; Summaries of all the episodes up to Season 3’s finale (Each episode taking up 2 pages and containing at the very least 2 pictures [1 episode screen capture and 1 vector]), a list of all the songs up to Season 3’s finale with lyrics (Basically acts as a sing along book), and the last chapter which is only a few pages talks very lightly about the fans (Both young and old)(Although Bronies are never mentioned directly.)

So the book doesn’t go over much that is new. Does that make it bad? Absolutely NOT! Not only is the cover artwork fantastic, but the inside is fantastic looking as well. The first 8 pages are literally the pictures and words from the book twilight was reading from the first episode of the first season (Once upon a time in the magical land of Equestria…). Each page is of a high quality print and the colors stand out really well and are quite pleasing to look at. There are also quite a lot of uses with vectors (Both stock vectors, show vectors, and some vectors I haven’t seen before [The Ursa Minor from the Boast Busters Episode Guide, well, his fur is in a green key, suggesting they added in his blue coat and stars in production, which I think is pretty neat). If you are looking for concept art, they are more confined to the first half and varies from page to page. Some have a whole page dedicated to concept art while most have straight up vectors.

I suggest you buy the book, and a copy as well. If you have a friend who loves to read and hasn’t gotten into the show yet, this book is just for them. It provides the most basic information a person would need to know about the show and after about a day or two’s worth of reading would be able to get most of the fandom really quickly. And as for Bronies that already know the show by heart…they should still get it. The artwork is very pretty, has a lot of vectors and some concept art, and having insight into the show through different paragraphs and quotes done by people who worked on the show is enjoyable. Plus, if we support the book enough, it may signal to Hasbro we will want one for Seasons 4+ and maybe and even more insider look into the show, both in show and behind the scenes wise.

Important question: Is it worth getting for the content as well as the cool cover?

“development artwork” I love dev sketches, I have dev sketches of many things that I really like, but the rest of the list just looks like filler :(.
