The moment in the video is around the 17 minute mark. It actually makes a good point how not every villain needs a complex character and motivation. With the likes of Sombra, it’s clear that he had all that power and it went to his head since he could do whatever the hell he wanted. THAT was his motivation and it’s good enough for me.

Not that the opposite is untrue. I’m just saying a blatant villain isn’t always a bad thing.

Um, the Crystal Heart was built up. That doesn’t count as a DXM IMO.

And really, sometimes being evil because “fuck you, that’s why” isn’t as unrealistic as you’d think. Even now and then, I imagined myself possessing great power and abusing the hell out of it. Of course, having all antagonists being just this would, of course, get irritating fast but I’m not counting them out now.

I think this video explains it better (don’t remember the exact moment but you’ll know it when you find it): http://www.thatguywiththeglasses.com/bt/the-sage/anime-abandon/39564-anime-abandon-new-cutey-honey

When you mention that, I thought of GI Joe (80s cartoon) and being an 80s kid, I had watched the GI Joe: Resolute mini-series. First thing Cobra Commander did to be a credible threat, outside of the joke character he was in the old cartoon, was blowing up Moscow as a demonstration in the first few minutes of the episode. This was a game changer that Cobra was no longer playing laser tag anymore.

Also, i forgot to say that villain that is evil for the sake of evil need to be credible threat. You can’t make someone credible threat in world where everybody is protected by toonforce. If you ignore it, you will get something like king Sombra:“rawrr crystalsss”, “lol nope, deus ex machina time” Imo writers of mlp shouldn’t even try to create villains that are evil for no reason.

Even character that is evil for the sake of evil still need some time and effort in writing to be interesting. I don’t think anyone want watch guy that could be replaced by random mook or monster without influencing the story.

Headcanon: The Element of Magic increases noit only the magic of the user, but also the emotions, personality, and motivations.
Twilight was powerful unicorn that was good natured, but a little skittish. After using the Element, she became Twi-Sue, a super friend, and extremely on edge/insane.
Sunset is a jealous, powerful unicorn that wants to prove that she is better that she deserves Celestia’s attention. After using the Element, she becomes an evil super demon monster thing.

    Elements corrupt when not being used by bearers explains Luna’s Nightmare Moon tantrum. She tries on her big sister’s Element of Magic and it increases her magic like it should, but also increases her paranoia and jealousy to the extent that she is willing to destroy all life to be the center of attention.

I believe it’s been stated that Sunset is actually a former student of Celestia’s and wants Twilight’s Element of Magic because she is jealous.

“You stole the life that should have been mine” is as good a motivation as any for villainy.

… Actually, come to think of it, that is pretty much exactly Zant’s motive in Zelda: Twilight Princess. Make of that what you will.

To paraphrase Owlman vs Batman with Sunset and Twilight:

TS: “You know this wrong, I know one time you were a good pony once.”

SS: “No. Not good. Never Good. After all… I’m only human…”

There are many ways to play “evil”, evil for laughs, evil for pay, evil because childhood backstory, evil because there was no other way…

Evil to be evil works in film because there is so much one can do in the time allowed, if too much time is focus on the anatagonist, the protagonist is just “good to be good” and that’s boring for a lot of people.

In case of the last Airbender, Zuko is the “bad guy” when they had time to develop his character and when compared to general Zhao, then Azula and finally the Firelord. Zuko went from villian-to-anti villian-conflicted character-to-antihero-to-hero. It pretty much how you balance characters in a movie and a series.

Really? That is what they went with? Couldn’t even just be an evil pony?

@Princess♠Molestia
Actually, demonic creatures are one of the few instances I’m willing to accept evil for the sake of evil as an acceptable motive. They’re magical demons, they’re are literally made of evil, it’s what they are.

Assuming of course, that Sunset is a “pure” demon, and isn’t just a magician going one winged angel.

I’m sure it’ll be something you won’t be happy with, like the rest of the show. ¬_¬

@PonyPon
Black sclera seems to do the trick when you want to make something look really evil. At least, it creeps me right out.

Acutally. I’m probably opening up pandora’s fricken box by saying this, but with all the villains today that have parental beating and a shitty life as their motivation, to the point that it’s such a cliche.

Having a generic motivation is actually preferable.
