So, Twilight’s crown from the coronation and what’s being stole is the Element of Magic “big crown thingie”, since that’s why she has to go and get it back to complete the Elements of Harmony.

Except . . . now she’s a chosen protect of EARTH rather than Equestria.
Of course, in order for it to work,there must be five other people wielding the other five elements, AND that their personality must be based around the element they hold. So Sunset’s screwed.
Supreme magical power derives a mandate from the masses, or from the personal effort to grab it.
I think we can all accurately predict that at some point, she WILL try to use it, only to embarrass herself.
Bonus points if Trixie points and laughs, ten extra if that’s literally the only thing she does in the movie.
If Sunset Shimmer doesn’t understand how friendship works, it might be possible that she acted under the delusion that she’s able to wield the power of the Element of Magic better than Twilight.
I’m saying I thought it was a “chosen one” type of deal. Sunset Shimmer might be every bit as skilled as Twilight, but she isn’t the bearer of the element of magic, so at best it’s just a fancy big crown thingy for her.
In Return of Harmony part 2 the Elements didn’t fail because Spike wasn’t actually Rainbow Dash (although his element did absolutely nothing), but because its bearers didn’t truly believe in their respective Elements.
Sunset Shimmer is proving herself very adept at magic, she might even be at Twilight’s level, having studied under Celestia.
