I distinctly remember a comment on her dA page (which was subsequently deleted), in which she said she planned Cadance as a pegasus from the get-go. GM Berrow preserved that detail in the book-canon backstory.

You completely misunderstood me. She was originally going to be a unicorn until the development team decided she should be an alicorn instead.
 
She was a pegasus in her backstory, which is completely different.

I believe that Faust was aware of Cadance’s existence prior to her leaving the show, but at that point she was just a unicorn. Her alicornification came at some point after.
