Except it isn’t. People can do that sort of things for themselves and only themselves. They want to look good just because they enjoy looking good. And I don’t know who are those two friend you are speaking of but that’s a completely subjective issue.
The only reason anyone tries to improve their appearance is to impress someone, be it friends, family, business partners or potential suitors. The fact that at least two of her friends can manage to cut a fairly impressive figure without trying really just says that she’s trying to keep up.
That’s assuming she only makes herself look prettier to gain other’s approval. If she likes to care about her appearance nobody should judge her because she “tries too hard”
which is what her character development in S4 should follow along

How so? Her hair has much more detail than the others’, to the point of looking 3-dimensional, and is also shaded, unlike every other pony who isn’t an alicorn. And although it’s because of the eyelashes, her eyes look very distinctive too.

Anyway, I actually think that Applejack is the least beautiful of the main six. She’s just so plain to me.
maybe it is because she is the least visually interesting character that when you dress her up she becomes so much more beautiful.
