The majority of mecha in fiction, has been humanoid. Even in some things where they aren’t overtly humanoid, they still take the form of creatures found on earth. It’s only natural that the majority of them take a more traditional, bipedal humanoid form.
 
Alien races with their own mecha, tend to make them in their own image. The classic Tripods from War of the Worlds is one such example.
 
So with these two considerations, it makes an enormous ton of sense, that should the ponies ever develop mech technology, that the majority of /their/ mech forms, would be quadrupedal in execution.
