We haven’t seen any unicorn that age use magic, Pumpkin Cake is younger than that and has been shown doing some pretty impressive things, but the show waves that off as being magical outbursts that all infants get.
At that point, she had trouble moving a quill. She was probably only ever given that test because her parents kept going on about how she was going to be the next Starswirl.
Twilight had dedicated herself to studying magic before her parents ever considered enrolling her in Celestia’s school. It was probably for this reason that she was allowed to audition. As for the entrance exam itself, it was either meant to be beyond the ability of the applicant or Celestia arranged it to test whether Twilight was the element of magic, otherwise every student at that school would be caring for a baby dragon.
So being affected by an incredibly potent magical effect is ‘one’s own merit’. I’ll have to remember that.
Cadence was Twilight’s babysitter because a Canterlot Wedding was poorly written. The audience was expected to care about her because of a connection she had to Twilight rather than because we knew anything about her, and we were also expected not to question that it didn’t make sense that Twilight was being babysat by royalty.
Shinning Armour doesn’t look any younger than any other guard.
It was implied that Twilight got into Celestia’s school on her own merit.
She had a Princess for a babysitter, Shining Armor appears to be much younger than his fellow guards despite being a higher rank and Twilight got a private audition for enrollment.
She was a noble before her coronation?
Cadence was born in a small Village, Shining Armor is a soldier and thus thinks anything not freeze-dried is a feast fit for a king.
