Seeing as though Nightmare moon in the SDCC footage broke a few windows with her transformation, My guess is that She destroyed a part of it and the forest took over the castle later.
When, exactly, did the forest spread? We know that the forest isn’t indestructible or anything. People can go in and out without trouble, if they keep their heads about them.
So, was it abandoned because of the forest, or did the forest encroach because it was abandoned?
