If I’m lucky, this year will be the year that I actually do NaNoWriMo. I need to wrap up some programming responsibilities for another community I’m involved in and get a new job in the next month and a half first. After November, I think I may finish up my clop fics (or possibly take a break from ponies and write out some pokérotica/pokésmut/poképorn first and then write clop).

I’m honestly undecided if I want there to be isolated human populations in modern Equestria or not. On one hoof, saying no means no goofy human in Equestria tropes. On the other, one of the crossovers I was inspired by did imply that this is a rare possibility.

seconded, I like it, and my headcanon also for this drawing is essentially, ponies and all survived humanity, by thousands of years, maybe millions - can’t tell that’s the mystery.

yep that’s a bit the idea. add with that maybe a layer of voodoo magic stuff, from a jet fighter that belonged to some kind of horde of warriors during the last war that almost ended humanity, more like the legend of Excalibur, or Alita ( Gally here in France) finding her berserker body, an old thing from another era.
 
Myself I made that short stuff based on a greentext story I posted on a writers thread on /mlp/ years ago, and never really finished it, but the idea that maybe alicorns were created by humans, and all the monsters being more or less the leftovers of whatever nuclear, bacterial and chemical mutations that almost caused a mass extinction.
 
There could be still humans, in other continents, maybe living in islands as autochthones tribes or deep in the forests, well at least we have one unicorn and cryptozoologist working on it.

I had an idea for a third part this afternoon where Twilight uses time travel to undo the tragedies at the end of the first part. However, everything goes wrong and Luna still ends up dead and Twilight is incurably corrupted from the force that annihilated Luna at the end of the first part. Celestia goes Daybreaker over this and accidentally kills Starlight for being in the way while battling corrupted Princess Twilight. Her regret returns her to sanity and she and Cadence are left as the two primary rulers of Equestria. It’s also a downer ending, but more action-packed and with different survivors.

After reading the caption for this image, the words that stick to my mind are “a perfect symbiosis of mare and machine”

It’s currently just some old clop I’ve written. What I need to do is put down Pokémon Go for a month this November and do NaNo to get this story written.
 
I seem to have suffered from having multiple personal projects that I can’t seem to prioritize. Not counting anything I’m doing under a different alias:
 

If I could live with one of my friends for a couple months, that probably would be the environment I need to stay on track. I really need to share small progress updates with others to sanity-check myself and to have some accountability for actually writing instead of spending all my unpaid time playing Pokémon and looking at clop. Actually, maybe I could ride all the Amtrak routes and write then—it was on trips between Chicago and Portland where I started this literary journey in the first place.
 
Once this is all out of my head, I can finally move on to my true passion: music. It won’t be brony music except for possible subtle details and certainly will be under another name, but I’ve got one album of spiteful music I need to make and then I can finally focus on the music that’s been stuck in my head since 2011. My creative ideas form a stack instead of a queue and many things I’ve lost interest in need to be completed first just so they can be done and out of the way so I can devote my full attention to the next thing.
 
Holy carp this was cathartic to write. I love times when I can be honest!

It’s a bit crossover and still bears marks from its conception during my fanfic binge of 2012, but here it goes:
 
Humans bred falabella horses for intellect with the intention of grafting wings onto them to create pegasi. (Standard mad scientist stuff)
 
Between using CRISPR systems and that flesh stuff from Series 6 of Doctor Who, they do succeed in creating their first prototype pegasi. However, calmnity wipes them out the human race (perhaps the Black Mesa incident—I said there were crossover elements, after all) and the ponies go feral. Nopony is quite sure how unicorns came to be, as time machines all malfunction when setting that as the landing point. It is rumored that Discord came to be when the tank of spare parts absorbed the energy and came to life on its own, but that will never be proven one way or ther other (if it’s true, Discord would be the oldest being in Equestria many times over).
 
The timeline of the story itself is shortly after A Canterlot Wedding, so anything after the first two MLP seasons that gets in the way of the story will be ignored (but later episodes that enhance the theme will be acknowledged). Twilight gets a summons by Princess Celestia and Time Turner/Doctor Whooves (how bizarre for Twilight to imagine a time-travelling earth pony). There, she learns that her mission is to help Princess Luna discover why every single time-traveller in Equestria mysteriously disappears forever at some point in their career. Secondary objectives for her mission are to investigate why there are sticking points where Time Turner’s TARDIS simply refuses to go and help her brother and Princess Cadence compile a definitive prehistory of Equestria (they wanted a truly unique honeymoon and they do successfully see the very first of feral ponykind as they escape the crumbling human infrastructure).
 
During their adventures, they eventually get an urgent summons to “SEND AID AT ONCE: THE PRINCESS IS DYING” with spacetime coordinates well outside the usual Equestrian universe and return to present-day Canterlot for an emergency meeting with Celestia (since they assume those are the coords of Celestia’s eventual death). Luna offers to go there and protect her sister and Celestia agrees because:
 

Shiny comes along as the bodyguard for his sister and Luna and Cadence also hops into the Tardis as her husband’s protection. When they arrive at the specified location, they find that Princess Celestia is not there at all. In fact, Luna and Cadence are the only princesses in attendance. However, the Tardis cannot restart to bail them away once they realized that Luna or Cadence is about to die. What they do notice is that they are joined by every single unicorn from all Equestrian history (including the future) who has mastered time travel as well as a couple of presumable time travelers of an unknown bipedal species.
 
 
I haven’t fleshed out the next part fully, but the Season 7 finale really inspired some changes here. Luna takes center stage and asks to consult with the most senior unicorns to see if they can free themselves. The spell instead acts like a potion that drives out the Nightmare from Luna (or some Pony of Shadows-like creature) and she charges it to destroy it so it never again can harm Equestria. Rather than a battle, Luna and the Shadow simply touch and annihilate each other, like a matter/antimatter pair. The energy released destabilizes the pocket universe where everypony was summoned and only Shining Armor and Cadence manage to escape (since they were the only two ponies still in the Tardis—Time Turner was also in the Tardis but took a direct hit from the annihilation energy). Everypony else ends up crushed and erased from history.
 
 
Part two takes place in Equestria 100 or so years in the future. Princess Cadence is the de facto sole ruler of Equestria due to Princess Celestia being too depressed with grief and guilt to function. Princess Flurry Heart does administrative tasks for the Crystal Empire but is not in the picture as far as most of Equestria is concerned (she’s no more than 50 years old at this point). It turns out that since Shining Armor was the first pony to touch Time Turner after his death, Time Turner’s remaining regeneration energy backflowed through Shining’s horn and gave him at least one regeneration (which he has used, so he looks and somewhat acts like an entirely different pony now but with continuity of memory and cutie mark).
 
The opening is that the collapse of a pocket universe is not enough to finish off Miss Sparkle. She has the Element of Magic, after all, so she journeys through the void and violently stumbles into Equestria (but 100 or so years after she left on Luna’s final travel) and painfully learns that she now has wings and is an alicorn princess. The rest of the second half follows Twilight learning about the interceeding century in Equestria and Celestia slowly leaving her depression and arranging succession: Twilight and Flury Heart will replace her and Luna, while Cadence will go to her natural throne in the Crystal Empire. Celestia is especially overjoyed to notice that Twilight’s cutie mark has changed to be slightly more lunar, as if she absorbed some of Luna’s soul. The ending is on the Summer Sun Celebration where Celestia lets her soul follow her magic to the sun and leave her body behind as a statue since she finally was content that Equestria will be in good hooves for the next millenia.

The non-clop fic I have in mind has a similar premise for its setting: Equestria is just Earth in the distant future after humans (and maybe the civilizations of other species as well) have come and gone. It’s why so many Equestrian places look like they’re originally designed for humans instead of for ungulates.

Scootaloo: look Dash…. I can fly too. as if by instincts she starts the old, dusty craft up and goes through the flight check. Long ago, before ponies existed, humans roamed Equestrian nation. Then as the years went by they slowly started to fade away, until….. only their technology remained. When the first ponies came they didn’t know any of this existed and for nearly two centuries the old human tech lay rusting and collecting dust. That is until this young mare stumbled across the old human craft.

exactly; she knows how to fly from instinct like all pegasus (bearing, AoA, thrust, altitude, etc.) and she’s skilled with tech but how she’s going to reanimate a ~2000 years old gen VI jetfighter from the LAST human world war, and how to operate it is definitively about supernatural stuff. i wonder if i’d draw a second sheet. myeah gonna do it for the fun since i renewed my drawing hardware and Canson stockpile.
