My headcanon is its just a spell that they sustain throughout the day, sorta has the same sensations of tying one’s hair back. When they stop sustaining the spell, their mane becomes normal, I.E. Like S1 Luna.
Hell, I’m pretty sure that even Lauren doesn’t have an in-universe explanation for Celestia’s and Luna’s unique manes…or least an explanation that she’s willing to share with us.
