>With videogames they were more flexible,I could always invite them home to play Driver or Tekken if we get bored of the dolls.
So they do exist XD. Most video games back then were made for the boy market.
>Indeed,The middle-high school stage is the one I consider a delicate stage since they are in that phase where they are looking to belong somewhere.I’ve seen some really nice kids end up badly because they get in the wrong crowd and gosh, heavens forbid you like something they consider it “childish” or not “in”.
I feel your pain. Many of my former friends who supported me back then either grew apart or gotten bad, some even started doing those type of things.
Some of them, yes.I specifically remember this one boy who use to tease me and constantly asking why I liked boy shows.I never got along with him, sometimes it was borderline bullying.
The rest of the boys were indifferent to ok with me,they ultimately forget everything when the time of exchanging cards came.I had this one friend who took all his repeated Pokemon cards and gave them to me.
Female kids,on the other hand, were a bit more difficult, they never teased me,but it was difficult to talk about say,Beast Wars when none of them were into the show, every time I tried to come up with the topic I got weird glances so I preferred to talk about Sailor Moon (which I also enjoyed),MLP or Sabrina The teenage witch with them. With videogames they were more flexible,I could always invite them home to play Driver or Tekken if we get bored of the dolls.

In my case,My middle-school days were sort of boring.I mean,I loved the Backstreet Boys a lot but I never reached to point of going full crazy like some of my friends were.
About Pokemon, yes,I can say that is true because of one of my closest friends. She said pretty much the same in regards of the “glory years” (which is true,it was a real fever back then),but the GBA/Hoenn generation days were especially hard for her since no one (except little children) played the games.
Did any male kids find you strange?
I usually kept my secret passion for those “girl stuff” ambiguous. But when my friends find out, they give me a few tease.
It was really those middle-high school stage when kids tend to try and “act cool”, when they themselves are quite insecure.
Pokemon fans frequently talked about the glory years of the franchise when they were in elementary school when everyone liked the series. But when they get into secondary school, people scorn the series. Only to later crave the series for nostalgia reasons when they hit college.
Ah,something similar happened to me with both Beast Wars and Dragon Ball, none of my female friends were interested in those shows so I had to keep it to myself a bit (except when the boys were exchanging trading Dragon Ball card packs).
But when it came to videogames,I guess I was sort of lucky most of my girl friends were in to them.In fact,it was my BFF who introduced me to Metal Gear.
>Jem looked interesting
I loved that show. The songs were awesome. And hilarious at some parts.I think it was the cartoon logic of the 80’s,but it wasn’t that bad.I considered Captain Planet to be more wtf, though.
>Watched a bit of Tokyo Mew Mew, but 4Kids ruined it
Yeah, never touched Tokyo Mew Me-sorry,“Mew Mew Power” because of them, ugh.Maybe someday I’ll watch the original.
Wow.
I admit, I did enjoy Sailor Moon for most of my Elementary Years until some bastard told me it was a girly show, unfortunately I was weak back then and bought into their pressure. Watched a bit of Tokyo Mew Mew, but 4Kids ruined it. Jem looked interesting.
Sailor Mars was Hot!
Transformers.It was Beast Wars fault.
I remember I was obsessed with Dinobot but I would never find him.So I settled for a Cheetor.
Pick up GI Joe action figures?
Oh,I did it a lot of times when I was little.Didn’t need rule 63 either xD
That’s because people are made to think that girls should like ponies. Animals can’t be a “girl thing” or a “boy thing”.
It’s only an North American-Europe belief anyway.
Reagan certainly didn’t have the best long-term economic policies, and his social policies did leave much to be desired. Never got the Reagan worshipers.
Such as Reagan’s high risk economic policies similar to the one the Bush Administration used which got us into this mess we’re in today? Which got our Great and grandparents into deep sh- during the 1930s?
I agree with that. But the modern interpretation of the 1980s usually leaves out the incredibly awful things that were ignored in that decade, and the steps backward taken by people hoping to undo the progress of the 60s and 70s.
>Besides, 1980s America was not a good place to try and cross the gender barrier.
It resonates to this day. But weakening. However, the 80s left other legacies from good to bad.
And yeah, this. Horses were always masculine, ponies were always cute and adorable.
Even real-life ponies are cute, but I don’t think that they really captured that until G4. It took almost three decades, but they hit on a pretty good mix of pony and other animal traits.
It was never about the horses as much as the men who rode them. The horses were extensions of them.
It’s common for little girls to like ponies, or want a real one. Something that toy companies have realized is that they can tread a certain line of realism, since it’s more the concept of owning something so exclusive that is appealing than the actual pony.
Besides, 1980s America was not a good place to try and cross the gender barrier.
Horses were, but cute li’l ponies weren’t.
Nonsense. Horses were a symbol of masculinity and strength, especially during the times before cars were invented. Just like how pink was considered a manly colour due to how it was the colour of flesh. Somewhere and somehow along the line, horse have been “hijacked” by feminism.
Are Mustang cars girly?
Well, ponies/horses tend to be more popular/well-liked by girls then boys, so for all we know, they might not of done well back then in the ’80s with boys. Cute ponies might not do well against G.I. Joe, Transformers, Ghostbusters, and TMNT toys.
(Also, do we really need to keep demonizing Hasbro?)
Though, you never know considering how popular the show is now.
I’m guessing she is quite proud that the franchise is taking shape into what she envisioned.
(In fact, she said she originally wanted to aim the toys at both young girls, and boys.)
Agreed!
