I think it’s just possible I may have drawn a bit of attention to this old series given the gap between old and recent comments here.

Not really, in the shows and stuff it’s not really stated but a lot of info outside of it is clear.  
Ryo-Ohki is made up of “Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki”, “Tenchi Muyo! GXP”,and “Tenchi Muyo! War on Geminar”, the last one has the hero being Kenshi Masaki, Tenchi’s younger half-brother from Nobuyuki marrying Rea.  
“Universe” is it’s mane show and the first and third moves.  
“Pretty Sammy” has three series that are not connected other then having Sasami as the main character and as magical girl.  
And “other” is anything that is it’s own entry into Tenchi Muyo, that is Tenchi in Tokyo, the second movie, and a new one called “Ai Tenchi Muyo!” that has the old gang but a number of new girls and… just look as this.()

It would be fair to say the Tenchiverse if you will has one of the most confusing timelines and continuity’s ever

Dividing Tenchi into OVA and non-OVA is actually a vary bad move.  
There are actually parts of the “Ryo-Ohki” continuity that are not OVA and there are some spinoffs that are OVAs as well.  
The devide is “Ryo-Ohki”, “Universe”, “Pretty Sammy”, manga, and other.
